Just wanted to post an update for all concerned for my son Jonathan. We just found out yesterday that his open heart surgery is going to be delayed until he is 2 years of age. We were convinced that it was going to be happening this fall so this is wonderful news for us! Thanks for all the prayers and support

I'm glad they are confident enough to wait - by then, maybe they'll say he doesn't need it. He'll continue to be in my thoughts, Jennifer!

Jennifer, I know what your going through. My son had open heart surgery in 2000, he was 4 years old. We knew for a couple of years that he would eventually need it. The wait was the worst part. Everything worked out fine though. It will absolutely amaze you how fast a child can recover from the surgery. The doctors told me he would only need to be in the hospital for five days. I didn't understand how that was possible but he did come home after five days and on the sixth day he was raking leaves with my husband!

Good luck, I'm sure you'll have a happy ending.

I will keep him in my thoughts and prayers. My almost 3 year old son has aeorta stenosis. Luckily they don't think they will have to perform surgery on him for that. He has had surgery before. He was 1 1/2. Kids bounce back fast.

He will turn 2 next week Wednesday! We count our blessings that he has been able to avoid the surgery this long. In many cases this surgery is done by 6 months of age.

Space Oddity,
Yes, it is a congenital heart defect, specifically AV Canal. Basically he has two holes in his heart that they are going to fix for him.

Jennifer,

I have to agree with Lin. My cousin's son was born with holes in his heart and his heart on the outside of his ribcage. He had numerous surgeries before ever coming home from the hospital and he is now 17 years old and seemingly on the way to leading a rather normal life. My prayers are with your family.

We too have experienced similar situation. Our son was born with another birth defect that caused undo pressure on his heart. At 3 months old we found out that he had 4 holes in his heart and the PDA duct was not closed. They monitored him until he was 18 months to see if they needed to do surgery. At 18 months all holes "appeared" to be closed and the PDA duct was also. During that time frame our biggest issue was he would turn blue - around his lips and his extremities (sp?). So we would have to rush him to Cardinal Glennon Children's Hospital to be checked out. Then when we went for his final Cardiology check up at 3 years of age, we expected to be in and out, run the normal tests and never to return again. Boy were we worng. The doctors found a "new" hole in his heart. Based on the diagrams of where the original holes were and where the new one is all we can do is believe it was unrelated to the others. But the good news was, where this one is he would not need surgery. He turned 8 last Friday and you would never guess what a slow and unpredicted start he had. He still gets worn out a lot quicker than his classmates and they say that has a little to do with the hole in his heart but mostly to do with the fact that his lungs are extremely smaller than normal (due to his birth defects). So, as we can not relate to the surgery you are facing this Summer, we can relate to the emotional roller coaster and the waiting game you have played. You hang in there, you have to for your son. And we will be praying for you at our house. Keep us posted.
