I was wondering (aside from the Salvation Army), are there any other groups that would pick up a gently used dining room set and china closet? They are too good to just throw away, and I would like to see someone make use of it. Thanks.

I'd contact your local shelter for abused women. Quite often these women leave their abusive situations with little more than the cloths on their back. Many do not work due to the controll's placed on them by their abuser and have little or no money. I've donated many household items of my own here in Anchorage to our local shelter. When they place a woman in a home they pick up the items from my home and deliver them to the home of the woman they're assisting. Because I know the shelter is limited in space here, I keep the item in my garage until they need it. (Often that's only a week or so). I've stored a few things for friends as well and let the shelter come and pick up when they needed them.

I did the same thing in Houston Texas. The shelter there had a storage facility for household items. They offered me the choice of a delivery van picking them up for me at a reduced cost to me, or allowing me to deliver. For the $25 cost of the pick up it was well worth my time.

These shelters put the items directly in the hands of women and families in real need. I always enjoy knowing I helped someone trying to help themselfs

You might also try Habitat for Humanity. Many times they warehouse usable items including building materials.

Yes, Disabled American Veterans. Also a worthwhile organization.

Another group is Deseret Industries. However, areas covered could be limited.

Another option is to list it in the paper for the cost of running the ad.

Good luck!

In our area, we have both Goodwill Industries and St. Vincent De Paul Society, which help those in need and have retail/resale facilities too. We also have a couple of food banks associated with local churches that accept household items.
