OK, let's write a novel.

1. Below is the beginning of the first sentence from a famous novel.

2. Now, each of you please add one sentence at a time.

3. Feel free to enter more than once.

4. If you do not like a sentence a BOL'r adds, just set the offending sentence out as a "quote" in your post, followed by a , and we won't consider it part of our story.

OK, here is the first line of our novel:

It was a dark and stormy night

P.S. There actually is a famous book that starts with this line. Actually, it starts: It was a dark and stormy night; Meg Murry, her small brother Charles Wallace, and her mother had come down to the kitchen for a midnight snack when they were upset by the arrival of a most disturbing stranger. Do you know what novel it is?

Our novel so far:

It was a dark and stormy night; somewhere in the distance, lighting flashed. Another reg had just entered into the world, crying for implementation. Bank trainers throughout the land, shivered and quaked in their wingtips. Examiners, in their dark lairs, chortled and rubbed their claws together gleefully. Mark had enough of this and switched stations. He remembered the days when Public Radio had music.

"Music, ah, that's it, he said to no one in particular; I'll quit this habit of working late at the bank on stormy nights and start a rock band."

A movie producer in Hollywood heard of this and quickly rushed a script into production for a movie starring Jack Black who is attempting to atone for that g-dawful mess known as Orange County.

I don't remember the name of the novel, but the author was Edward Bulwer-Lytton. Every year a contest is held in his name to see who can write the worst opening sentence for a novel.

(sorry to break the thread; I'll continue it below)

Mark, however, not knowing anything of this incipient development--since who pays attention to anything happening in California anyway--continued to twist the radio dial, trying to coax from its struggling innards any semblance of melodic respite from the interminable task of keeping up with regulations that dropped with more frequency than the rain beating against the windows of the now darkened office, giving him concern that he might now be the protagonist of some sadistic new reality show called "Survivor: Banker's Hours", which thought caused him to shudder and lose his grip on the radio knob (to say nothing of his increasing tenuous grip on reality itself).

As the dial turned and twisted in his hot sweaty hand, he startled, hearing a loud noise behind him.

There was a knock on the door, some people entered. It was the two internal auditors. The Director of Auditing hit the monster with his big file of findings.

and then took a union-mandated coffee break, followed by lunch.

(have to say, Steve H's entry is by far the best so far.)

It was ambitious and adventurous. The "plans" as he saw it included torturous training the clueless dogsbodies at the bank, and the sad realization that he, and he alone, will consume about 3000 trees for training materials.

The thought of consuming the trees caused him to pause. Trees were the one constant in his life, from climbing them during his youth, to that dark day in the forest that forever changed his life.
