We have just finished a year long implementation of a windows NT network. I recently have been given the task overseeing IT security. At our last IT exam from the OCC, they recomended that once our network was up and running that we have some sort of monitoring software installed to make sure that the network is secure. Does anyone have any suggestions or experience with such software? Any resources or information would be greatly appreciated.

Initially I would recommend having a third party assessment done of your network. This will confirm that you have a solid and secure design. As far as monitoring or intrusion detection software (IDS) there are a large number of products to choose from. A good place to start in selecting a product is the SANS web site, http://www.sans.org. Under their Security Reading Room there are a number of articles on understanding and selecting intrusion detection software. Another option to installing and monitoring IDS software yourself would be to use a managed security services provider (MSSP). An MSSP will help you design an IDS solution and provide ongoing monitoring and management of the solution. Another good source of information is < a href="http://searchsecurity.techtarget.com">http://searchsecurity.techtarget.com, which has information on both IDS products and MSSP's.
