It's not so much your ignorance as that I can't spell. Yes I meant Greg Maddux (old Cub and Brave). I heard another report that although they are trying really hard to get him, he may be asking for too much money. Too bad too, I remember in '89 when the Cubs went to the playoffs with "The Professor" pitching.

Well, let me ask you this as a Cubs fan. Would you want him, even if you could get him? What I am saying is, could the money be better spent elsewhere? You guys already have Kerry, Wood, and Zambrano. It would seem to me that you'd be better off spending the millions elsewhere. What say you?

I want him - not only will he make the young guys even better pitchers (versus throwers), but IMHO, he is the best conmtemporary pitcher in the game of baseball and I want him to go to the Hall of Fame in a Cubs uniform. I will take 10-12 wins out of him rather than someone like Estes.

Just got sick of being one of the only people to post their face, so I took it off. (and that is not a soliciation for people to post their face, but as maria and dawnie would agree, no need for my big head to be out there!)

Even if Maddux goes back to Chi-town for one or two seasons, puts in 10-15 win years, and say the Cubs even make the playoffs or (jinx! jinx!) go to the Series, he'll still to to Cooperstown with an "A", not a "C" on his hat. You can't beat ten playoff seasons [edited: and three Cy Young awards] with one team.

Amen brother. The same reason I would want him....he can teach the other guys something.

I, however, am going to keep my picture put. It works well with my tagline.

Hey CubDave, remember the Astros only finished one game behind you last year with a terrible starting rotation!

Trust me - they scare me - i just don;t think Clemens makes them incrementally scarier. I love Clemens - I wanted him to come to the Cubs when he went to the yanks, but I'd be much more worried if they had signed someone like Vlad G.

The Astros biggest 2 problems now are this: Biggio at lead off and Biggio in Center. Almost every other position can be considered a strenght. The Astros finished 3rd in the majors last year in total offense, but they are a bit feast and famine at times.
My biggest concern with Clemens is does he hold up given his age and pitching half his game as Minute Maid park with that stupid short left field.
It should be fun. But then again you guys have Dusty and we have Jimy.... on second thought maybe I should be scared!!!
I can't wait to see the first time he goes to try and pull Roger in the 7th inning with a big lead!

He was on with Dan Patrick right after the announcement and Dan asked him if he was going to pitch differently now that he has to bat and he said "NO!". He stated that he was in control of the ball until it left his hand and it was the batter's job to get out of the way!
I'm going to enjoy having someone on the Astros with a little personality.

I was at UT when he was there, but I can't remember if he could bat. But of course, there is that little issue of a two decade layoff.

Pitchers and catchers, report!

And not long after that, those other magical words will be said.....

'The Brewers have been mathematically eliminated from the playoffs'

Aren't they mathematically eliminated on opening day?

I don't know--if they are eliminated not long after pitchers and catchers report, it will be some time during Spring Training.

No, you're thinking of the Detroit Tigers...

Hey now! This is baseball, folks - everyone starts with the exact same magic number. Who was honestly thinking about the Marlins (THE MARLINS!) at this time last year?

You're right. I was just having some fun at the expense of the Brewers.

That's ok, I think most people in WI do this as well.

When talking Brewers baseball, one has to have a sense of humor.

My guess is that you guys are celebrating the signing of Greg Maddux. Your young guys will have one of the game's greats to learn from. I'm thinking the Cubs will have one of the best, if not the best starting rotations this year.

Not to, uh, pollute (as Cubs fans may think) this thread with talk of the "eeeevil empire" (meaning the Yankees), but do you think that A-Rod's signing automatically means a return trip to the Series for the Bombers? Sure, they now have loads of offense and a nasty infield, but they lost Rocket and Pettite on the pitching staff. What do you baseball aficionados think (not hope, think)?

Hey, now when the Cubs play the Astros, Maddox and the Rocket can:

1) share Ben-Gay;

2) reminisce about disco dancing;

3) talk about their pet rocks;

4) discuss where they were when Robert Kennedy was shot;

5) Get ideas for gifts for their grandkids from the younger players;

6) Use their seniority to make sure the music in the locker room tends more toward Cheap Trick than Nirvana.

GOT ANY MORE???
