We are having a discussion on how checks are to written if they are for receiving cash. For example, John Doe wants to cash a $5,000 check that is drawn on him at the bank. Does he make the check out to cash or does he make it out to the bank?

I have looked for the answer, but for some reason my brain is dead and I can not locate the answer.

I have seen it both ways. I would select making it payable to himself or cash and endorsing the back of the check as well.

To him personally or cash and have him endorse. NEVER to the Bank unless he is paying an obligation.

Agree with GP. We've been told by operations not to allow customers to make it to the bank unless it's a loan payment.
