First time parent of a (soon to be) 6 year old here.

She got invited to her first "friend-birthday-party" for a little 6 year old boy in her class. I don't know what boys are into?

What is an appropriate gift? Money? Toy? Jelly of the month club? Can I call the parents and ask? Is that rude?

I would call, I think that is a good idea.

Not that you are looking for a wish list, but nothing wrong with getting a general idea what the kid might be into.

Are Lego's and Smurfs automatic winner's anymore?? confused

I was shopping for my nephew last night... so much garbage out there frown (as well as some mighty cool stuff that was a little jealous of laugh )

Oooo!! Exciting!! Birthday parties are fun at that age. Little boys always love Legos. Or Hot Wheels. Or anything that makes noise. Or is sticky. Or smelly.

Was there a "theme" invitation sent? You know, like Batman, Hulk, etc? That is usually a good indication of what the child likes. At least that's been the case for my "nephew!"

It just so happens I have one of those . . . a 6 year old boy, I mean. Right now he is into anything Bakugon & Transformers. Those are pretty popular right now. Oh, and Ben 10 also.

Can you take your daughter along when you go gift shopping? She might have some ideas.

And can I ask, when did Lego's get so freakin' expensive???

Almost a better investment than gold...

My 5 year old grandson is into GI Joe and Transformers although his birthday party next week will be a pirate theme with a scavenger hunt.

Especially the Star Wars kits. I bought a couple for my grandson last Christmas and couldn't believe they would cost so much.

My son is retaining all of his booklets and original boxes, he told me he was going to sell them on ebay when he grows up...

Lips, legos were and are always a hit with little boys.

If you have to ask if it's ok to ask, I'd pass on that - you're just as likely to get "oh, you don't have to get anything" as good advice, anyway.

Can't go wrong with Legos. The Bear could probably give insight into whether he always talks about Star Wars, Transformers, etc. Since my wife is a teacher (and most of the kids' friends have siblings that she has taught or will teach) she tries to give gifts that are somewhat educational. One year we stocked up on some little interactive banks that count money as you "deposit" and "withdraw".

QCdL - it's been a while, but our youngest got a couple of ToysRUs gift cards. Then they can have the fun of picking out what they want.

Legos have always been expensive. What about K-Nex? They're fun but I don't know how expensive. I agree with the Matchbox/HotWheels. They have accessories and things to go with them.

If your daughter knows what he likes (Transformers/GI-Joe/etc), how about a tee shirt or sweat shirt. The boy's mom might help with that also. Don't be afraid to ask - especially with a girl giving to a boy.

I have two boys who are a little past that age but they loved Hot Wheels type cars and Nerf footballs. I would advise getting something that won't damage the house or won't get the child in trouble when they want to play with it. There are also a lot of neat puzzles and books out there with markers (washable). You could do a theme present that would give the child everything to make a model or craft or build a car....paint a fuzzy poster, etc. I like gifts that encourage the imagination rather than those that just make noise....but maybe that is just me! grin

Thanks all!!
I think that I'll go home at lunch and grab the invite so I can look at the front (duh! mental head slap!) and make a call.

The bear wanted to ask him in school today what he likes, but will probably forget, so it'll be good to call, I think.

This 'having a kid in school' thing is fun!

out of the frying pan...
I usually send my husband to the store and tell him to "find something he would have liked." It's worked so far (6 year old godson, 5 yr old nephew).

I think at age 6, that would be expected, AG.

Besides, you don't have children, why are you weighing in on this? whistle

My son who just turned 6 is into Bionicles by Legos. They are pretty cool. He is also into Bakugans, Transformers, and GI Joes.
