Is there a reg that says we can't cash US Treas, Social Security, and state unemployment checks for non-customers? I seemed to remember in the past, this was termed 'a basic banking service and was prohibited....Also if there is no reg, can we charge a fee to cash these types of checks.

Not that I am aware of. You may want to check with state law. You are free to charge a fee.

My bank is under the assumption that we cannot charge for any government checks, regardless if they are a customer or not. It would be wonderful if we could charge.

That would be in your state regulations.

Nebraska has a guidance that "discourages" banks from charging fees on any state municipality. As Duchess stated, check your state regulations.
