Interracial couple denied marriage license

HAMMOND, La. - A Louisiana justice of the peace said he refused to issue a marriage license to an interracial couple out of concern for any children the couple might have.

(For Barbie, what I really mean is is it 1955?)

So Cal
Sure Straw, I know what you really mean is that you wish it was 1955 because you are obviously insinuating that you approve of the license denial!! wink

1955 was the year Marty McFly danced with Lorraine at the Enchantment Under the Sea dance and punched out Biff, so it wasn't all bad.

It can't be 1955 - our currency isn't tied to gold, and they can print all they want whenever they want.

As for the marriage license thing - that's just silly. Give them their license already. They're not special! They have as much right to be miserable as everyone else!

Interracial couple denied marriage license

That title is somewhat misleading - they already had the marriage license - he simply refused to marry them. While I disagree with his decision not to perform the marriage for them - what makes it illegal? Ministers make that decision all the time.

I agree.

The Catholic Church has some very strict rules on marriage.

Although since this was the justice of the peace (a government official, no?), wouldn't he be in violation of some equal protection clause or something?

I think because he said he would not marry them based on race...

He's a justice of the peace, not a minister. He can't say he won't marry this one, but will marry that one, so long as they meet the stgate's legal marriage requirements.

Does the Civil Rights Act not place this justice of the peace in a criminal position?

Just an observation, but I've always noticed that children with mixed backgrounds are generally beautiful and almost always get the best features of both parents...

Keith Bardwell, justice of the peace in Tangipahoa Parish - you are a backward imbecile!

When I was in grade school <I'm 48 now> there was a young bi-racial girl who rode my bus. I lived in an area with few minorities, so she was 'different'. That poor girl was harrassed on a daily basis by the kids on the bus - and I have never forgotten that.

Skip ahead 25 years - one of my son's best friends from grade school through high school <he's 22 now> was bi-racial. Everyone loved Evan - classmates - teachers, etc. What a difference a generation makes.

Thank you!

I don't know which I find more disturbing - the fact that a government official refuses to perform a job function because of someone's race or anyone who tries to defend his actions.

Suppose a lender refuses to make a mortage loan to a mixed race couple because the lender feels there is a greater possibility they might get divorced?

You need to re-read my post, Princess Rooney, if you think I was defending him - I was merely asking a question. I don't know what Louisiana's laws are concerning JPs - never had a reason to find out.

You might try reading your tag line.
