Where the heart is

To follow up on Kat's thread, anyone want to share stories on how they proposed (or were proposed to) marriage? We had been dating for almost a year. We were attending college classes at night after work, and would meet for coffee when class was over. One night, as we were looking at the vacation schedules, and I was trying to plan an overlapping week that wouldn't look TOO conspicuous (Yeah - I was young and really thought we were fooling our co-workers!), he looked at me and said "Why don't we just take our two weeks together and make it our Honeymoon?"Needless to say, I accepted and we starting to make plans on the big DATE and all, and I got home around 1:00 a.m. I still lived at home and my folks were asleep. I left for work the next morning without seeing them. When I got home from work, my parents had a huge fight earlier that day. So - as I was getting ready to tell my Mom the big news, she burst out crying and sobbed "Oh don't ever get married. It's the biggest mistake you could make!" Yeah - I had a hard time explaining to my husband why it took me a WEEK to tell my folks about the engagement. His entire extended family around the GLOBE new about the engagement before my folks did. My Mom claims no knowledge of that comment...

I wish I could say we were on a tropical beach with the wind blowing our hair, the sun setting with the most beautiful colors over the ocean, he drops down on one knee, looks up at me and says....I cannot live without you... Yeah right, we were in his 1979 Ford Pickup, the stinky one he uses for work. How romantic! I guess I didn't marry him for is "romantic" side!

we had been together for over 2 years and had been talking about getting married for a while. well one weekend i went to my mom's house to do some shopping... that night i talked to him on the phone... he'd had a little to much to drink and started talking said he tried to go to the "store" but as he got to the door he got nervous and came home... so he asked if i would go with him... Uh Yeah!!... so that monday (monday before thanksgiving last year) we went to the mall to get some "shoes" (he couldn't say ring hehehe)... so i picked it out, we bought it and then he wouldn't let me hold it or anything... we went home and i made dinner... just waiting... and waiting. he just kept tossing the box in the air like a baseball. Finally while Friends was on the tv... he got on one knee and asked me to marry him... i cried, we ate dinner and called our folks. Not much on sterotypical romance, but good enough for me.

These are all great stories.
Mine isn't finished yet.
I was thinking of proposing on Valentine's day 2004. My girlfriend loves this Valentine song by Martina McBride. It seems like that would be the day to do it.

I love this story. My husband and I met when I worked in Indirect Lending and he was a Finance Manager for a dealership in another city. We did the long distance thing for about a year and then he moved to my city. One day a girlfriend in the department took me to lunch at a pizza buffet in the small town where we worked. We had only an hour for lunch but she kept eating and eating and eating. I could tell she was begining to look a little green from so much pizza but the girl would not leave. I told her we were going to be late and she just kept on eating. FINALLY we were driving back to the bank and we pulled in the parking lot and then she screamed, "I think I hit a chicken!" (not uncommon in rural areas ), so she backed up the car and said "look!"....up on the bank's marqui there it was, "Mackenzie, will you marry me? Love Greg". I about died! We ran into the bank and they had my desk covered with a white table cloth with champaign and Herseys Hugs & Kisses all over my desk. My husband got down on one knee in front of all my workers/friends and asked me to marry him. Then they let me off work for the rest of the day so we could go tell our families. Side note: customers kept coming through the drive-thru wanting to know what my answer was!

I am not married to this man anymore, but his proposal was very sweet......We went to high school together and he had had a crush on me since our freshman year, but was too nervous to ask me out on a date until our senior prom. Prom was absolutely the best date I had ever been on and after about a year of dating, he came to my house to pick me up for "dinner". He made me close my eyes (which irritated me but I did it anyway). He kept driving and driving and driving. Then when we finally stopped, he made me keep me eyes closed and then we walked and walked and walked. I kinda figured out what he was doing, but I had no idea where we were. When we finally stopped walking, I opened my eyes and we were standing in the middle of our high school football field. He was down on one knee and said that he realized he was in love with me during one of my dance team performances at a football game and I was standing in the exact spot that he was proposing. It was very romantic!

MacKenzie - you brought tears to my eyes. Nikko - ditto! Those are both incredible stories.

We had a very romantic dinner with lots of wine while on a barge floating down the Seine River. After dinner we went to the top of the Eiffel Tower and while gazing at a nighttime Paris I asked her to marry me.
Mistakenly thinking that 5 star hotels and Paris vacations would be part of the deal she said yes.

LOL, but I'll bet she would have said yes without Paris and the 5 star hotels in the picture.

This past May I started dating a "friend of a friend" - I've been single since 1979 and believe me, the last thing that I thought I wanted was a serious relationship. From the first time we went out we knew that there was more than just a casual friendship. In August we went to my favorite Italian restaurant for my birthday. After dinner I left the table for a minute... when I came back he began talking about our relationship and what it meant to him. He said that he had just one more question to ask - he pulled the dessert menu back and on the paper tablecover he had written "Will You Marry Me?" -- my answer was yes - and we celebrated our three-week anniversary yesterday. Ain't love grand?

My wife of 2 1/2 years and I dated for about 6 years at the end of high school and through college (5 hours apart during this time). We had also been boyfriend/girlfriend as 10-12 year olds after meeting at a summer daycamp. On her birthday the summer before my senior year of college her family was at my parent's house celebrating. With everyone watching, and on videotape, I gave her a Bible with a note inside that said "I give this to you as a gift for your birthday, and as a reminder of the day I asked you to be my wife". Then I got down on one knee and proposed. I don't know if I've ever been more nervous or more excited.
