ST. CHARLES, Mo. – President Barack Obama denounced waste, inefficiency and downright fraud in the government's health care system on Wednesday as he sought to rally public support for his revamped overhaul plan. "Improper payments cost taxpayers almost $100 billion last year alone," Obama said at a rally in this St. Louis suburb.

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20100310/ap_on_bi_ge/us_health_care_overhaul

I guess if health care reform is not passed we will continue to allow these improper payments? Nothing we can do about this without comprehensive reform?

wait a minute...back up the train. Where did I miss the part about Medicare reform being covered in BO's health care plan?

I like the newsman who reminded viewers that BO's plan is aimed at covering only 16% of Americans. But we'll all pay the trillion dollar bill.

I think this one could have gone under the HDDTTWA? heading too. crazy

I've noticed that a lot of B.O. supporters in the cooler have "run for cover" of late. Come on, what do you guys think of Obama's health care saga?

It's not the reform I wanted.
It's better than nothing.
I am concerned about how it's going to affect premiums, but I think not passing the bill would have a more negative effect on premiums.
Technology should be a bigger part of health care reform. I went to a doctor yesterday and they kept a clerk on full time exclusively to file paper records. Seriously people? How much does it cost to keep that employee on annually with benefits and everything? $40k? Why not just digitalize your records and be done with it?
Pharmacists should have the ability under the new reform to write prescriptions for low-impact drugs. Why do I need to take my toddler to the doctor every time he has an ear infection and I just need some amoxocillin?
Oh, and somewhat related- stop farm subsudies. It makes bad food way too inexpensive.

I've said it before and I'll say it again - BO does NOT have our best interest at heart. Great point Truff. He is just trying to "spin" info to his advantage so that the bill can be passed. My main question is...what is there about passing this that is so important to BO? There is some other underlying agenda or else this reform would not be chocking us all right now (they are trying their darndest to shove this down the throats of the American people). Buccs is right - things could be run alot more efficiently. BO is spending the majority of his time and effort on this.....aren't we at war...doesn't the nation have other big issues at hand?

Something has to be done. Premiums are supposed to go up 150% from 2009 to 2019 if nothing is done. This will kill small businesses.

I disagree.

1. It's worse than nothing.

2. My premium is fine thankyouvery much and we covered a transplant forr goodness sake.

3. Your doctor out in the sticks? I think your particular clinic is antiquated. All and I do mean ALL of our doctors are paperless, even the ones not in the big city.

4. You don't need to take your toddler in everytime. See the antiquated doctor comment in #3. Our doctor calls in meds all the time. We've come home with a PICC line, IV meds, a feeding pump, a NG tube for feedings, I don't need a doctor for every little thing.

5. Pharmacists should absolutely NOT write prescriptions. Period. See #4. They don't keep your child's records and would not always know your child's special needs. Would my local phamacist know the amount of immune-supression my child is on? No. I don't fill that locally. To do so would mandate that they (pharmacists) carry malpractice insurance. Think big picture on this one.

6. Huh? Health care bills should not include farm carp or student loan stuff.

Yes, and the republicans had some good ideas to help with that. As the CBO has stated, the current plan will increase premiums. Oh and bust the budget.

But I would still like to know why, if the President believes there is $100 billion in waste, we cannot attack that immediately. Seems like there is no interconnectedness involved here i.e. if you fix this issue, another issue will overwhelm this fix. But I am sure Obamaites have a good explanation for this.

TOTALLY disagree. This will do nothing except increase taxes, increase government intervention in our lives, and create more bureaucracy.

Sometimes I think that sole result of bureacracy is the beating of common sense to a pulp and admonish it.

Please see the thread about how the prisoner's attempt at suicide postponed the state putting him to death.

Why not start with finding all of the wasteful expenditures, fraud, etc. and possibly work with the doctors, nurses, medical insurance companies, and public to really figure out how to get things straightened out, then possibly do a smaller plan for those who aren't covered?

I would rather have this than some giant monstrosity that will affect 1/5 of the economy. Plus, from what I have heard, no one really knows what all is in the deal yet. Super.

QCL- the reason I mentioned premiums is that my dad owns a small business and covers his small office of 7 people plus their families. Over the last 5 years, his premiums have gone up 11%, 13%, 10%, 8%, and 22% from the year before. No one that works there has had any major surgery or chronic condition that's being treated. It's unsustainable.

In regards to 3- It's not atypical in my area. My primary care doctor is in the process of converting to digital records, and I have been to 2 specialists in the last 12 months that both worked off paper records. The only all digital office I have been to was my son's pediatrician, before he got hauled to jail (but that's another story).

I have never managed to talk a doctor into a script over the phone.

And in regards to my comment about farm subudies- I agree it shouldn't be in the healthcare bill, but if we want to get serious about managing the cost of chronic care, we need to end farm subsudies for crops that make junk food (and food-like products).

Pelosi had a great quote yesterday saying, and I am paraphrasing, that they need to pass the bill so everyone can find out what's in it.

I know she meant they need to pass it so people can see the benefits, but the quote was still funny.

He signed an executive order, so it is going to be addressed immediately.

So why doesn't he just sign an executive order for healthcare if he's getting all the pushback...

The state didn't administer justice. IMHO if the guy would have been allowed to kill himself, the state didn't fulfill it's punishment.

I love the feeling of "lets pass it then figure it out", which is essentially what Speaker Pelosi said recently. Unbelievable. Lets put the next several generations of citizens in debt without understanding what the bill is or will do.

It is a terrible bill. Clearly some changes need to be made, but it should be done incrementally, not all at once.

Well after 1 year and 36 speeches on health care its about time. I look forward to hearing about the $100 billion being saved. I just hope its not like jobs saved and they actually save the money. I am sure our diligent press will make sure he actually follows through with this, like he did the interrogation team he announced but never implemented.
