Does anyone out there have some best practices for disposing of checks for Branch Capture? Do you shred the checks yourself, do you use a shredding service? How long to you keep checks on file before shredding?
Are there specific guidelines for Branch Capture that have to be adhered to?

We generally ask our branches to hold 5 days of work in their vaults. Then the work is placing in secured bins to be shredded by a service.

We keep ours for 90 days in boxes in the vault, and throw them in locked bins that are picked up by a shredding service every two weeks.

We keep all branch captured work in locked cabinets for 6 months after the last day of the month, then the work is placed in locked shred bins for the company to come and shred.

We just started branch capturing a year ago February. We have stored all work for all 14 months in a locked room and are just going to begin shredding everything over a year old on an ongoing basis now. We use locked shred bins which are then picked up by a shredding company mobile truck and shredded here on site in our parking lot once per month.

Eventually, once management is more confident with the system, I would like to keep only 90 or 180 days worth of work. Once it's been imaged and we've balanced, I don't see that we need it any longer.
