24 dead and 4 still missing in West Virginia.

Lots of prayers, hopes, wishes and thoughts going out to the families that lost loved ones and those still clinging to hope for the 4 missing.

Oh, I hope and pray that those 4 are in some air pocket just waiting. Just hold on...you know they are trying their best, just hold on.

God bless their families, it is a dangerous job....

you head out the front door to your job, never realizing you will never return, so hug your family every chance you get!

So sorry about what happened. My grandfather was a coal miner, those guys earn every dime they make.

Man, this just sux. May God Bless their souls and their families during this tragic time.

As if mining isn't a difficult enough job, then stuff like this happens. Dang.

my grandfather started in the mines, also, but his parents moved away from coal country because they didn't want their sons working in the mines.

My Papa owned a mining company and his youngest brother was crushed when a big rock fell on him. He left behind a two little girls, two years old and the other only a few months old. The mines are so dangerous.

My husbands family - cousins, uncles etc - work or worked in the mines in WV. Prayers for the families. The work is hard enough then add a negligent owner on top of it and it really stinks.

Prayers for the family and friends of the miners. So tragic.

Would be nice to see some charity efforts and drives to help these families.

That's good, but from what I have heard of the area, they aren't exactly flush with money. We are so good at taking care of others in the world, but we seem to have a tendancy to overlook our own that need help.

I know this is true of the mining town where my Mom's family lives. Actually, "aren't exactly flush with money" is kind of an understatement.

I may be Princess Rooney, but I am also the Queen of Understatement. I know a number of folks from West Virginia from the horse rescue world. Chronically poor would be another understatement.

Mining isn't like back in the early 1900's where they got paid by the ton, worked horrendous hours, and they 'owed their soul to the company store'. Pay for underground miners is no where near the poverty level. Most positions are around $25 per hour, with shift foremen making much more than that. Not rich but not poor either.

The miners I know have nice cars, homes, boats, take nice vacations, etc. - just like everyone else.

BUT - they always seem to get the most horribly dressed, uneducated person to interview on TV. No matter what state you are from.

I am not saying that the miners are poor - it's the area in general and it has a long history of being one of the poorest areas in the country.

Prayers to all - families & miners.

My family is from WV and that part of the country is seriously one of the poorest.

Is it true that when they are on a rescue mission and they are down in the mine, if they find a survivor they release a balloon to signify to the people up top that they have found someone alive?
