Were the houses masonry or some other rigid material BnS and Ledeana?

That is a sad day indeed to lose everything.

I knwo many of the buildings that were damaged in El Centro were older brick buildings.

Pale, it was made of those funny yellow and brown colored Mexican bricks.

I think the border is open for crossing on foot. The main port of entry in Calexico is closed to cars because of damage but the last I heard you can walk across. BNS - so sorry to hear about your sis in law! How devastating!

Most of the damage that we saw in El Centro was older buildings and anything made from brick or concrete. Lots of broken windows, ruptured water lines, LOTS of frayed nerves! I work part time at the mall and our mall was closed today due to damage.

Worked all day yesterday afternoon and most of today cleaning up my folks house. They lost so many things! Their power finally came on today at 5 but almost everything in their refrigerator was spoiled by then. What a mess!

Calexico is right on the border, next to Mexicali. Lots of older buildings, most of them have been red tagged now. We are still having a lot of aftershocks but, thankfully, have not had anything over a 5 in a while. Praying for things to calm down soon!

I was stunned by how long it lasted! We were about 50 or so miles north of the epicenter and we could feel significant shaking for at least 30 seconds. It went on so long that I thought it was something other than an earthquake.

We are still having an abundance of aftershocks here. Many of the businesses in Calexico have been red tagged which will cause many, many people to be out of work. Our nerves are shot, a lot of people, especially south of the border, are without homes now. It's a really bad situation for many people.

frown I looked at the USGS map over the weekend and was stunned by the amount of earthquakes/aftershocks. There were almost 3,000 in CA.

I can only imagine how your nerves are Ledana. Hang on, hopefully things will quit rocking soon.

That must be really scary...I feel for everyone over there. I cannot even imagine, but I would guess a LOT of sleepless nights have been had by many.

there was a large aftershock on Thursday--a 5.3. I felt it pretty good in my building as I was giving a webex class. Attendees in New York, San Fran, and LA had a breif moment of entertainment as I described the shaking/swaying and seeing the movement from the window. One attendee in my building on the first floor didn't feel it, even as I was desrcibing it (which is weird because others on the ground level here in San Diego could feel it).

The Governator was here in Calexico last week quickly followed by a visit from the wonderful (sarcasm intended) Barbara Boxer. While she was in Calexico we had a 5.0 aftershock. Timing is everything!
