We received an error acknowledgement per e-filing of a possible mismatch between the name reported and the corresponding SSN. The SSN used is "Valid For Work Only With Ins. authorization". The name on the CTR and the number are the same that was on the SS card. My question is can you use this SSN for CTRs when it is for work only?

Yes. And we have also found that the Valid for Work Only cards are sometimes recently issued and IRS's records may not yet have associated a name with the number. We keep on file with a copy of the error acknowledgement that the name and number do match.

Remember - social security numbers are issued by the social security office. The 'Work purposes only' numbers are not social security numbers and are issued by the IRS.

OK they are not social security numbers but do you agree that I would use this number as the social security number on the CTR.

I say yes. Per the CTR instruction: Item 6. SSN/ITIN or EIN. Enter the Social Security
Number (SSN) or Individual Taxpayer Identification
Number (ITIN) or Employer Identification Number (EIN)
of the person or entity identified in Item 2.

Isn't the number you're using the ITIN? We've gotten some of these back in the past. I agree with banker 1976- newly issued card not associated with the name.
