Calling on my Texas BOL friends - Hubby & I are going to be staying in San Antonio over July 4th weekend & I am wondering if you all have suggestions on good places to eat. We won't have a car & he really wants to sample good Texas BBQ. We are doing a walking tour of the river walk and historic area on the 1st so hoping there are good places along the river walk. Thanks

San Antone is not known for its barbeque Cork, that being said, you might try The County Line or Dick's Last Resort. I think both are on the Riverwalk.

County Line is pretty good. I was really surprised how bland many of the Mexican eateries on the riverwalk were. I wouldn't recommend Dick's Last Resort. There is an Irish Pub that has pretty good stuff, but obviously not barbecue.

Yes, I know. I knew it was going to be awful but I decided to do it anyway. In that way, it was exactly like my decision to watch some soccer this weekend...

the Riverwalk is for tourists, so Tex-Mex is probably what they are known for. In addition to The County Line:
Rosario's
Schilo's is a good German deli/restaurant (most of this area and north were settled by Germans, up in the Hill Country are some great places to visit...Gruene, Boerne, New Branfels...
Tex-Mex:
Henry's Puffy Tacos The Little House Oasis Rueben's LaFogata's Taqueria de Mexico Blanco Cafe Los Barrios Mi Tierra El Mirador Pico de Gallo (across street from the Market). Walk the Market if you have the time, the place has been there since Texas was an independent country.

We also ate at a German restaurant in New Braunfels but I can't remember the name. And a little cafe in Wimberly (again, the name escapes me). Hill country is beautiful. The only places we ate at in San Antonio were the Alamo Cafe and What-a-Burger. Oh, and an authentic mexican restaurant by my sister's apartment in Alamo Heights.

I looked up a place called Rudys BBQ, recommended by the friend of a co-worker that lives in San Antonio and it looks good. Found out last night that friends who will be there also are driving so we will have transportation. Might try the one in either Leon Springs or New Braunfels.

Corky - I'd shy away from College Station, rumor has it the oldest man in the US lives there, and his crotchetiness has rubbed of on the entire town...
