Is there a website where you can go to verify a Taxpayer ID number?
Thanks

No. The IRS offers a feature if the account is subject to information reporting - but it would be after the fact. Other options are credit reports, etc., but that will just tell who has been previously reported with that number.

Searchbug.com will give some basic info (when issued) that might help confirm validity of a number. You don't get the name associated with the number.

Lost in the rain.
There are lots of vendors that will verify vs. their own information, but if you want it from the feds it will take time (several days at best) and a fee (best done through a vendor).

The IRS "e Services" that rlcarey mentions is free and responds on an overnight basis.

Actually, once you are set up to use it, you get an instant response. We use it at account opening for individual numbers and periodically, we submit a bulk file of our whole data base (you can submit up to 100,000 at a time) to keep things cleaned up. I generally get a response on those within an hour.

So the IRS E Verify can only be used for interest bearing account owners?

We can use it for everyone because we report to the IRS.

Per the IRS, "E Services" can only be used on customers where the bank has an obligation to file an information return; e.g. 1099 INT, 1098, etc.

OkieOps, we report to the IRS as well, but only for interest bearing accounts. We don't report anything on non-interest checking accounts.

So if I undestand what Ken's post says, I can use E Verify if I am opening an interest bearing account for a new customer (to confirm TIN), but not if they are opening a free checking account.

Correct, you can only use if you are verifying because you will be required to file some type of information return on the person.
