Polar Bear Club membership renewal is open only from 12 noon to 12:02 PM on 1/1/04 at your local swimming hole. Will I see you there?

Why would I want to jump into freezing cold water? I also don't care to eat black eyed peas on New Years, which many say is a "must".

Boomermom, I would like to have the recipe for "Good Luck Soup" if you have it handy. My family loves soup, and this would be a good tradition to start at our house as well.

Yes sirree… after a refreshing and invigorating dip (why you ask, sometimes I have asked why… ) then off to eat black eyed peas and turnip greens (for cents and dollars).
Got to start-off the New Year the right way!
Maria, your son is welcome – but his swim ‘time’ WILL be limited.

If you're willing to share your recipe I would like to try it too, me and my husband love soup. I am going to change the tradition this year and try the black eyed peas and pickled herring, it can't hurt.:) I like just about anything anyway, I love food.

I'd like the soup recipe as well...sounds like a winner! I'm fixing blackbean soup tonight...haven't done that one yet...hope the kid will eat it. We'll be at a barrel race on NY's day, but our friends are supplying ribs and blackeyed peas and I don't know what else so long as we supply them their beer...sounds like a good deal to me!

Its a southern tradition here is the complete meal and what they supposedly "bring" to the family: Blackeyed peas- change Collard Greens - Greenbacks (dollars) Hog Jowl - Good Luck (flavors the greens and peas too) Corn Bread - Keeps the family together Pork Chops ( cause I lik'em)
Some traditions are listed here. In addition to the black eyed pea it denotes "Eating pickled herring as the first bite of the New Year brings good luck to those of Polish descent." I think I'd want my new year's kiss before that bite is taken.

I'll be there! We started our own polar bear club tradition in my pool back in 1994 and have observed it virtually every year since then, although we've cheated a couple of times and heated the water. To qualify, you have to get in up to your chin. Then you race like the dickens to jump into the hot tub. We usually take pictures of us in our swimsuits with that day's newspaper. Nothing quite gets your heart pumping like a plunge into icy water. The rest of the year I get ready by taking cool showers.

Andy, thanks for the information on the cornbread bringing wealth.
Blackeye peas, a double batch of cornbread and a Lottery ticket seem like a great new tradition for New Year to get and stay wealthy.
