I know this sounds weird - but he is my son's dad. He had a tumor removed from his bladder today and it was much bigger than expected - took up about 20% of his bladder. Hopefully everything will be fine, but there is a possibility that they may have to remove his bladder. Don't like the man particularly, but don't want anything bad to happen to him.

Thanks - and keep the prayers coming. He goes back to the doctor on Tuesday and my son told me the doctor said it may have spread. My son was going to New Orleans on Sunday for a mission trip - to help build homes. He's cancelling and staying with his dad.

The news could have been better, but it could have been MUCH worse. Apparently they removed about 25% of his bladder. The cancer is an aggressive form, but hasn't gotten into his muscle wall. They will perform this procedure again in 2 months to see what's going on. If it's gotten worse they will remove his bladder.

I found out last night that it's worse than I thought - or that my son told me. The cancer has spread into the muscle wall and the procedure next month isn't just a scope - it's further surgery. I don't know if my son either 1) is in denial; 2) didn't understand what the doctor said; or 3) didn't want to tell me how bad it was. I think he would understand - he has a biology degree.

Thanks. They actually found a fragment, but they were able to remove it. He goes back for another check up in 3 months.

He is now going to have to have surgery again. During his 3 month checkup today they found a spot that was small, but too big to remove at the doctor's office. I had hoped it was all behind him.

My son texted me yesterday. His dad went in for his quarterly check and was clear. This is the first time since his initial surger in October 2010. All others he's had at least a spot that had to be removed. My son his thrilled!!

Once again, John is having surgery this morning to remove another spot of cancer in his bladder. This is his 4th surgery and he's been fighting this for 2 1/2 years. He is trying to remain strong, but I know he's frightened.

The surgery went well. He'll spend the night in the hospital and then go home to recover for 2-3 weeks. And then in 3 months go in for his quarterly check and maybe, just maybe, he'll be clear. He's only had one visit where they didn't find something; however I think that is common with bladder cancer.

Update - John had a kidney biopsy yesterday. After finding more cancer in his bladder and damage to the tubes (don't know what they're called) from his bladder to his kidneys (kidneys looked good), the doctor recommends he have his bladder removed. He's only 57 and I know they can rebuild it from muscle, it's just such a horrible thought. He just lost his mother last month and now this. He's been fighting cancer for over 5 years now. Prayers would be appreciated.

My dad is going in for testing Feb 2nd for the same possible issue.

Skittles, my dad had bladder cancer and had his bladder removed - replaced by a baggie (ileostomy?). After a slight adjustment (2-3 weeks) it did not bother him at all. Only downside was a few infections which cipro took care of - lived for 16 years after (and died from other causes - the cancer never came back!!!)

PS My ex and her husband are our best friends. Sounds crazy, but the first ones to visit after we moved, ex MIL took care of our daughter when she was born - no issues.

It's been 4 years and I'm bringing this back up. I spoke to my son this morning and his dad's cancer has now spread to his kidneys. They will be scheduling surgery to remove at least one of his kidneys. They won't know about the second one until they get in there.

I appreciate any prayers you can provide. We all know how powerful they are!

Yes it is. Surgery is scheduled for Saturday and with times the way they are he won't be allowed to have visitors while he is in the hospital. My son is pretty bummed about not being able to see his dad.

Sending prayers. I completely feel your son with the visitation situation. We just went through that with my son after his transplant.

The surgery was Saturday and they removed his left kidney. His right kidney does have cancer. In about 4 weeks after he's done some healing they will perform another CT scan and go from there. Honestly - none of it sounds good. The doctor never actually expected the cancer to come back once his bladder was removed - and this cancer is moving fast.

I'm sorry Skittles....my brother had kidney cancer...i really sympathize.

After going home on the 16th - my son had to call an ambulance last night to take his dad to the hospital. He had emergency surgery last night - and his one kidney isn't functioning fully yet - but that could be partially due to his low BP. My son authorized dialysis today (his dad is still in ICU and on a ventilator). The doctor said he will be in the hospital for 7-10 days and on an IV antibiotic for approximately 2 weeks.

Thank you all for the continued prayers. John passed away last night; however his sons were able to be with him shortly before (broke the ICU rules) and say good bye. My son is mourning; however he knows he has a lot of work to do over the next few months.
