So remember I am still a newbie - however I read a lot of the questions posted here and I thought I had learned that fraudulent checks could warrant a SAR to be filed. I've read through the Q&A on FinCEN and OCC but I am confusing myself further. So for instance if we had a payroll check come thru that had our routing number on it but is NOT our customer never has been and was cashed at a big chain store - would we only return the check as account not found? Or would we file a SAR or what? What if it were 5 checks on different days with same company name on the check but different payees each time?

Thanks
Mel

There are mandatory dollar thresholds which require a SAR. FFIEC BSA manual outlines these thresholds.

Also, aside from the mandatory thresholds, you should review all the facts and draw your conclusion based on that. What one may report another may not.
