This is my first foray in to the world of check clearing/returns/etc - so any help is majorly appreciated.

We paid a customers check twice and it was brought to our attention a few weeks after the fact (we have since implemented the systems that monitor for duplicate check numbers) - I'm in the time frame where I have to deal directly with the Bank of First Deposit -
Can anyone direct me to where I can understand what their responsibilities are when I contact them?

It will depend on how it came to pass that you paid the check twice. Provide that information, and we may be able to suggest an answer.

On June 7, so I was operating under the 'assumption' based on the FRB's own information that we were under the 6 month rule (I submitted the Check Adjustment request on 12/6)

that's what I would try to do - go through the fed first. They will either tell you to deal direct or send a request to the other bank for permission to debit. If they request permission to debit you could probably have at least a 20-30 day wait for a response (I try and respond on these right away just to clear them up) smile
