We require head tellers to do surprise cash counts monthly, documentation is sent to internal auditor, who then reports to audit committee quarterly. IA does cash counts as part of the annual branch audit. Was wondering how everyone else handles this, and if having the head teller do them monthly is overkill. We have it risk rated-- medium. Ideas?

We do the same as you, except we report to Management Audit Committee monthly and Board Audit Committee quarterly. We had stopped doing the full-cash annual audits and recently restarted them at board's request.

We do this exactly as you described.

We do them monthly although only required by State to be done quarterly. My Internal Auditor sends a teller drawer to be audited first thing each morning to two people at that location, usually a Supervisor unless it is their drawer being audited. If they did not count the drawer that day we reschedule it on another random day but I report that to the Board in my monthly meeting with them. They also send their blotter and bait sheet stamped and initialed by both tellers to audit for our workpapers of the monthly counts.

Does anyone have a sample cash count sheet that you wouldn't mind sending me? I am new to audit & no one in our bank can find a sheet that I can use.

We have three branches and I as Internal Auditor - quarterly choose random days to appear at the branch at opening for morning cash audit. I then count each drawer and vault. Then something I started this last year to do at least annually is I took the compliance officer around with me to do a complete vault count(counting all straped $). After each cash audit I report to my audit committee and board.
