I think they say usually 6 months tops before the dried stuff expires. But I personally think it depends on what it is. Also, never store your spices over the stove.

Spike is a lot like Mrs. Dash.

Spices are generally good until they no longer smell strong

Herb and the like are pretty similar - if they are dried and flake pretty easily without producing a strong aroma - then pitch em

otherwise if kept cool and dark, spices will last for years

as long as they still smell they are good

Only six spices?? Goodness, that's tough to narrow down.

I'm growing my own saffron, so that would be high on my list. But other essentials would be black peppercorn, coarse sea salt, bacon salt (and I'm tickled pink someone else thinks so highly of this one, as well), cumin seed and dill. Actually, dill is my favorite aromatic and I'll probably grow some of that, too. If I get my patio garden set up, I may also grow basil, garlic and rosemary.

I knew you'd have some suggestions, BaBo. And I said 6 only because I didn't want people to have to work too hard on a Tuesday! laugh

But I'll take as many suggestions as I can.

Now, if someplace local would sell bacon salt, my day would be complete. I guess I'll have to order it online.

I never thought about spices in a jar expiring.

My general rule of thumb is, similar to Carnival, if they still smell, then they're good.

I use the opposite approach in picking out my clothes each day.

How hard is it to grow saffron? The stuff is so expensive to buy, but so unique!

I'm curious about that, too. I already have a small herb jungle - saffron might be an interesting addition.

I'll find out this fall. It's a crocus bulb and is dormant in the summer. I was told it does well in the desert and can be container grown. Harvesting is supposed to be simple and you just allow it to dry out. The bulbs should be dug up and separated every three years. The single bulb I bought in November has several leaves sprouting out. This should be an exciting experiment. I think I paid $5 for it, but since it's a bulb it'll pay for itself over and over. If all goes well, in a few years we can have a BOL Bulb Exchange or something.

Rosemary and thyme and very easy to grow, they are hardy and can tolerate neglect, especially the rosemary. The taste is sooo much better than dried. I keep mine in a tall clay pot in the sun. The pot serves 2 purposes, one to keep wandering dogs from lifting their leg on my grub and the other is that I can take it with me wherever I go. This is the third home my rosemary plant has lived at.

Keep us posted on the saffron BB. I always wants to cook with it but I'm too cheap to spend the money on it.

I need to repot my rosemary. It's now been in the same pot for 10 years and 3 moves. smile

I hope to grow herbs this spring also; however I have to figure out a way to keep my dogs out of them.

Bacon - as for the bacon salt - I was just trying to think of the things I reach for most often and that is one of them - green beans, scrambled eggs, etc. Yum!
