Last year, I had been thinking about signing up for a mini-triathlon held in the area. It's called Tri-For-A-Cure and the money goes to breast cancer research. At the time, I was all gung-ho about it. Then, the more I thought about it, the more scared and freaked out I became. I did some research and found out the event is really popular and typically registration fills up within minutes. So I thought that I would be able to use that excuse when I "couldn't" register. The universe called my bluff last night. Not only have I stepped out of my comfort zone, I'm pretty sure I broke it. I thought I would go thru the motions to register, just to be able to say, "Gee, I tried... ". I was able to register. So, 177 days from today,(yes, I counted), I will be setting off on a 1/3 mile swim, 12 mi bike, and 5k run. I will need your support and encouragement. If you would like to donate (you might be able to deduct any contribution to this years taxes), please visit my site: http://tfac2011.kintera.org/mhemphill If you can't contribute, just encouragement will be more than enough. I will post my updates here as I start training. My goal is to FINISH, not to win anything. Thank you in advance. So the moral is: Don't challenge the universe. It may push you to new and exciting places.

Thank you ladies! Of course, it being me, I was all set to start training this morning, and I woke up not being able to straighten my left leg. So I'm limping around today thinking about how I won't be able to do anything.

A friend of mine recently got into doing triathlons. He started with a "mini" one, and enjoyed it so much they ended up putting in a pool at their house so he didn't have to go elsewhere to swim anymore. BTW, he's running marathons and now doing triathlons 6 years after shattering his knee in a wreck. YOU CAN DO IT!!!

I don't know your sign, but today my horoscope read:
It's been said that if you want something you've never had, you must be willing to do something you've never done. Albert Einstein said "If you want different results, you must do different things." Success can be yours through a different path.
Are you a Scorpio by chance?? Wishing you the very best!!

With motivation and encourgement you can do anything. Stay positive, remember your cause and like you said your 'goal is to finish not to win'.
I'm wanting to do a half marathon next year (by then I will be down to my weight goal and in better shape) I'll be asking you for advise.
Good luck and I'll visit you website.

Way to go Kitten! You have plenty of time to prepare - just remember that you can't train for it all in one day. Start slow and work your way up.
For me anyways, the swimming would be the most grueling part of the event. Definitely swim a lot! It will build cardio for the other two legs of the tri at the same time. You also want to train going from swim to bike to run as they use different muscle groups. I run and bike a lot, but doing one immediately after the other is a whole different story.
The adrenaline on the day of the actual event will give you an unbelievable boost. I ran my first marathon with a lower leg injury that hurt so bad I could hardly walk the night before (I don't recommend this, by the way) but race day adrenaline took over and got me through it.

Thank you TJ. The running part will be the worst for me. I know the swimming will be easiest and biking next. So, while the snow is on the ground, I'll start running jogging on a treadmill then move outside when it gets warmer. Then add the bike, then add the swim. Have I mentioned that I'm freaking out?

A 5k will be a piece of cake for you - it will come at the end so you can pace yourself. If you have the swimming part down, you will be fine. Friends of mine who run and bike that have done tri's have told me that the swimming kicked their butt. I always considered myself a strong swimmer.... in the pool. Open water swimming is something I haven't done a lot of.

Kitt, I did a mini tri once upon a time. I am a strong swimmer, but it's definitely different swimming in open water - if there's any way you can train that way, even if it's just a couple of times, do it. The bike wasn't bad at all. But what I really liked was the camaraderie of the women (mine was a Danskin and only open to women) doing the event - it was a really great atmosphere, very supportive and eveyone encouraged each other along the way. For the vast majority of us, it wasn't about "winning", it was about accomplishing / finishing. You can TOTALLY do this.

Thanks EGB.
I'm going to be looking for a wet suit so that I can train in the ocean this summer.

OMG Kit, this is wonderful news!! You can definitely count on my support for the event and through your journey. Reading this is literally bringing tears to my eyes. So many people people sit around and complain about their miserable ciscumstances but they do not have the courage to stand up and take charge and make changes in their lives. They don't realize that they hold the power within themselves to make the most amazing things happen!! And that they can feel good about themselves and live joyously! You are so brave to have set out on this new course you have charted. You are AWESOME!! Now get that leg better so you can get on to the fun!
