We have a customer who frequently makes cash deposits around $1000 with absolutely crisp $20 bills with serial numbers in perfect sequence. Is there a legitimate reason a person can have access to this amount of bills in this condition. The customer is evasive when asked. Thanks.

I would consider a SAR. Not because of the deposit alone, but because he does not want to explain it to you when asked.

And what line of work is this depositor in?

I filed a SAR several years ago for a deposit or two from a college student. The deposits were approximately $6,000 in sequentially numbered hundreds.

How frequent are the deposits?

Also, does each deposit pick up the sequence near where the previous one left off? This would indicate a pool of cash that is being deposited in pieces, vs a trip to a neighboring bank to withdraw new 20s.

Tellers don't like new money, and if I get some in my shipment, I'll sometimes put those in the ATM machine.
