Le sigh.

I know. You're right. I will.

Thanks for the advice. I really appreciate it. smile

Getting old was the reason I stopped running and switched to rollerblading.

Then I got older and switched to mt bike.

Older still and now ride a couch

Do people still rollerblade? I might like to try that.

I would hope so it is a blast. I used to go 30 miles at a time on each of sat and sun. and only 10 miles a day during the week. (darn work)

I am waiting for my daughter to get a little older so I can teach her.

I wish I had the coordination to rollerblade, it sounds like a fun workout!

Kitten, I do the heat and ice rotation with the knee and take anti-inflammatories. I also did physical therapy for a stint since the doc thought the reason it got inflamed in the first place was due to some wrong movement in the knee - hence finding out I had weaker inner leg muscles.

Can't say I've had that problem in awhile now. ::knocks on wood::

I did jog/run again yesterday. Went 0.2 mph faster and lasted 3 minutes longer. So I'm up to 23 minutes straight. Would love to be up to 30 minutes by the end of next week.

And I'm looking to do a 5k this summer.

Also found a new motivating factor. My old man (aka: Dad) is now running 5 miles a day. He used to be a jolly round grandpa, and now he's a thin, healthy grandpa. If he can do that in his 50s, I can do that in my 30s. Right?

NP - that's awesome! Talk about motivational. I'm kind of hoping I can be a bit of a motivator for my hubby. He's been eating better with me, but he still falls asleep on the couch right after we put the kids to bed, and he sleeps through my morning run...

On the upside, I finished week 4 of the cto5k today, and I feel like I won the lottery! Getting a little less scared for the 5K in May. (?!?)

Running and riding everywhere ...
Calm down...take a deep breath...its not the end of the world. (I know, much easier said than done)

My PT told me I couldnt run for a week or two in January. I had similar knee issues for the first time in 3 years of running. It felt like I had gravel under my kneecap. I also had the WHY ME moment...I was a few weeks into spring marathon training in the best shape of my life. The pity party I had was a bit much, my friends and family didnt like me much. But, I'm back up to 30 miles per week already. Listen to them, they know what they're talking about.

You mentioned the bike...I couldnt do it when my knee was at its worst, anything that bent it irritated it. Swimming was best. A odd form on the elliptical was second. Dont do anything that irritates it. A week or two off now is better than permanent damage to the knee.

Have the PT find the source. The knee isnt the problem, it's the symptom. Somewhere in the chain that is your body is a weakness or biomechanical imbalance. Your knee is just the weakest link and acting as your body's "check engine light". Find it, fix it, and you'll be better than ever. Promise.

You're right. I know you're right. And I know he's right. But I'm just SO MAD!!

So I'll go to the running clinic just to see what all they have to say, but I won't do the running part of it.

Definitely go to the running clinic! They might help pinpoint the source. They can tell a lot just by watching you run 50 feet...that wouldnt really violate the PTs orders...would it?

Someone mentioned an inner/outer thigh imbalance up in the thread, those types of things can really mess you up. Take this time to focus on some strength training. Work on your weaknesses, mine is my core. Its not nearly as fun as running, but is a necessary evil.

And it's ok to be mad. Really mad. But focus on the long term. I had to change my goal from the full marathon to the half next month. I was really mad...but am better now that I let it go and just enjoy running. I'm even doing a half tomorrow as a training run in horrific weather just for the fun of it.

Best of luck and I'm sending lots of patience and healing vibes your way!

She has great advice (and a ton of experience). Taking just a little time now to isolate and fix the basic issue will save you a lot of time off (and pain) later. You will be surprised, you will lose much less than you think. You have already conquered the mental part of this. That was the hard part. You are just having a little physical setback and thats just the nature of the beast. Be as mad as you want to be, but you've got this!

TAK - don't let go of the goal. Things may be switched around for now, but you can still do this. smile. You've got me inspired and excited about going into my third week of the C25K. Now, if only my spiffy new running shoes would come in! cry (which BTDub I'm very glad I went to the specialty store and got the coRrect 'equipment'. I found out I had some movement in my arches and got inserts to correct that as well as some cushy new socks smile ) So keep going Hun!! You're my hero!
