If underwriting has concerns with the appraisal, can the lender contact the appraiser with the concerns or should it be an employee that is not part of the lending function?

As I understand it if the lender is reviewing the appraisal and has questions about it they can contact the appraiser as long as the do not directly or indirectly coerce, influence, or otherwise encourage an appraiser or a person who performs an evaluation to change the value of the property.
