I've experienced tick paralysis with one of my dogs years ago. Once the tick was removed from the upper cervical area...he was good as new! Great news for Patches! I would have never guessed a tick bite would have done that!

Pumpkin is kind of a miracle food for the dog's digestive system...I've seen it help with not only constipation but diarrhea. Just make sure you buy canned pumpkin and not pumpkin pie filling...I had a friend do that once by accident and it was not pretty smile

Glad to hear things are looking up!

No change yet. She went back to the canine eye specialist on Monday and the Doc says the left eye is slightly better but still too much blood in both eyes for her to see the nerves. Prognosis is still hopeful. Continue steriods and antibiotics. Come back in two more weeks.

I have to say that I am exhaused. We (me) have to let her out every 2-3 hours because the steriods cause thirst, which leads to a very active bladder. I have to get up 2-3 times throughout the nite to take her out. Awesome MIL comes over 3 times during the day and takes her out. I'm afraid that if I don't she'll either explode or it might do some harm somewhere for her to have to hold it in all nite. We've been crating her at nite.

Bless her heart, she lives in our foyer and we have to take her out on a leash because she flat runs into everything. She will not and has not moved from about a 4 sq foot area going on for about 12 days now. She is just so timid. I've laid a path of rugs around the house (she won't walk on tile or wood floors) but she's just too scared. I got her to come into the living room with me for about 15 min. last nite but then she went right back to her spot. The quality of her life sucks right now. I pray it gets better.

Okie - we had the same steroid issue with our greyhound a few years ago. Poor baby would leave a lake in the dining room - I worked 40 miles from home.

Thanks everyone. I'm beginning to think we are going to have to start a BOL Pet Forum. I have 5 dogs to contribute.

Wanna hear about the Rott that found a porcipine (AGAIN) and ended up at the vet last week, under sedation, to have the quills removed?

Wanna hear about the daughter Rott that is so happy to be in the house in this hot weather (i.e. 105-108 degrees) that everytime we let her in she lays down on the cool tile in the laundry room and pees.

*sigh*

The worst part is they just won't learn. This happens a couple of times a year, between the mom and daughter. We never see the porcupines to kill them. We just wake up in the mornings and find dogs that look like Santa with a full "quill" beard. Our sainted vet says our dogs are about the worst he's ever seen for this. And the fact that they don't learn. Once I had to take in both dogs the same morning. They get them in the nose and between their teeth.

That sounds just awful - and so painful for your dogs. Our two shelties like to lay on the air conditioning vent when it's blowing; however they have good bladder control. The basenji will lay flat out on the tile or wood floor if she's hot. She looks so funny splayed out like that.

We used to have an English springer spaniel that would stick his nose to the air vent, and if it wasn't on, he'd stare at you. smile

This was also the dog that drank out of the toilet and in the summer if he thought the water was too warm, he'd bark for you to come flush the toilet. Ewwwwwwwwwwwww! sick

hey bagweaver - my whippet drinks regularly out of the toilet. not sure why, he has fresh water 2x a day. vet says its something about the swirling water or moving water that whippets like. so, i'm looking for a water bowl that has moving water.

One benefit with him drinking out of the toilet was dry ears. If he drank out of his water bowl, they got wet. His ears would drape over the toilet seat when that was his bowl of choice.

My ESS drinks out of the toilet during the night because she doesn't want to go downstairs. My husband gets mad so he puts the lid down. (I run in after him to put it back up grin)

Still no change with Patches, no improvement at all in her sight. She is still on steriods and antibiotics. We don't take her back till next Monday.

She is having such a hard time adjusting. She is not, after three weeks, memorizing any of her space. She gets turned around real easy and balks when you try to correct her direction. Even taking her straight out the front door and back she gets turned around. It hurts my heart to see her this way.

I now have a patch work of rugs around the house so she can wander, which she is now starting to do. If you'll remember, Patches won't walk on tile or wood floor. A trip to the vet could include you dragging her to the back exam rooms while she lays on a rug. grin Either that or you have to carry her 65 pound hiney around.

Good news! Took Patches back to the eye doc today and the doc says she sees improvement in Patches' eyes and she believes that Patches might even be able to see a teensy bit. My husband, who took her today, said that he was encouraged that Patches didn't walk straight into the side of the truck when they were leaving, like she has been doing. We have to keep her on the steriods for a little while longer and back to the doc around the end of the month.

My MIL, who walks her every day said she thought Patches took the step on and off the porch a little better today.

It could be that the improvement is going to happen as fast as her decline into blindness!

Thanks for the power of BOL prayers.

Great news! I just read an interesting article yesterday about blind dogs. They suggested using different scents to mark things to help the dog out. Use one low on each side of a doorway and another on furniture they tend to walk into.
