When I went to visit with my son and his family, my grandson showed me what the tooth fairy had left on her last visit to him - lots of coins, including pennies. Guess he must have been last on the list to visit that night.
Wonder if my DIL and son had to pool their money to come up with that. None of us carry cash any more. We're all debit card driven.
This made me think of something clever that I witnessed. I was visiting a friend overnight and her son lost a tooth. The next day, he was so excited to show me what the tooth fairy left him. It was a couple of German coins. My friend said that when he lost his first tooth, the fairy purse was empty… so, son got a few Mexican pesos that she had stashed in a drawer. He was so excited to get coins from another country that he couldn’t wait for show-and-tell at school.
The following day, she had the presence of mind to stop into a local coin shop. She said they had baskets of old coins on the counter and they were really cheap. She got all kinds of used coins from several countries for less than ten dollars. With each tooth lost, her son got a different coin(s). (Sometimes just one or several, depending on the type of coin.)
They’re not new or valuable to a collector, but it started a fun hobby for her young son just because she was broke! Now, he has loads of foreign coins. As he told his story of the tooth fairy, other people began to give him foreign money, so his collection grew – and he loves to show them to everyone!
