I'm currently working on a training guide for all our tellers for completing CTRs. I have 3 different references, and each reference says something different when it comes to Item 6 (SSN or EIN). One reference says: "If none, leave blank" and other reference says "If none, write 'None'" and the final reference says "You are not allowed to write 'None'". LOL! This is confusing! Can anyone clarify for me?

The instructions to the paper form say:

Item 6. SSN or EIN. Enter the Social Security Number (SSN) or Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN)or Employer Identification Number (EIN) of the person or entity identified in Item 2. If none, leave blank.

If you're filing electronically and the instructions differ, follow them.

I would use the instructions from form 104 smile

Item 6. SSN or EIN. Enter the Social Security Number
(SSN) or Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN)
or Employer Identification Number (EIN) of the person or
entity identified in Item 2. If none, leave blank.

When all else fails, go to the instructions. In the instructions for item 6 on FinCEN Form 104, it says to leave it blank if the person does not have an SSN or EIN (or other acceptable TIN).

Of course, the instruction only applies to completion of the paper CTR. You may have to do something else if you're completing a CTR to be filed electronically.

You could also have no SSN if a non-customer structured multiple transactions between different branches.

If I have a "none" CTR - I send those in via snail mail as my software & BSA E-filing freaks out.

If you file electronically, it will allow you to put 'NONE' in the SSN.
