In April, we are taking a road trip to Niagara Falls which will be more than a several hour ride (I know, what was I thinking?). I was wondering if I could get license plate colors for the different states, I can have my 8-yr old search for them while we are driving so he does not get too bored...

Help??? Please. Thanks.

Maria,
Here's a link to Colorado's plates. There are many, many different specialty plates all with different colors. They all have the mountain background in common.

Indiana's are extremely unattractive. A greenish-blue color. So unattractive that when I bought my new red car last summer I paid extra for the IU vanity plates. At least the red matches.

Somewhere
Mass has about 15 plates out there, but the basic ones are red, white and blue or just white and green. There are now Cape Cod, Red Sox, Bruins, Children, etc license plates but they cost more than the normal plates.

All over the map.
Have you ever played the alphabet game with him on trips? My kids loved it. Find all the letters of the alphabet, in order, and the first to do it wins. We made it tough and wouldn't allow them to use license plates to find their letters on one particularly long trip, and man, did they sit up and pay attention when we would pull into a new town. Q was tough unless you found a Dairy Queen!

elena,
Do you just pick letters off of the signs? buildings? Can you tell me the rules, please? That sounds like fun.

You got it. Signs, buildings, semi-trucks (including mud-flaps... ) That's all there is to it. The only rule is that you have to go in order. (you can add the no license plate rule if you want, but that makes it tough on long stretches of road with not many signs!)

Play the "cow game"! It works well for my kids.

Divide the car into two teams (generally the drivers side vs. the passenger side) and count the cows on your side. Keep a running total. If you pass a cemetary on your side all your cows die and you start over at zero. The one with the most cows when you reach your destination wins.

For extra long trips, we would play until we stopped for gas or lunch. Having a couple of games (chances for the other sibling to win) during the trip.

We lived in western Nebraska and would come to Missouri for summers and holidays. It was one of many ways my parents tried to keep four girls from killing each other in the back of the station wagon.

We also played the alphabet game, and a version of the license plate game. One of us would keep a notepad and record every state we saw, on all the trips we never got all 50 states.

Virginia has so many choices! Most everyone has a scene of some sort as part of a white plate. Since this area is so rich in history, there are pix like a patriot playing a flute, George Washington/Mt.Vernon, the pentagon with 9-11-01 in the center, etc. - I have a ship sailing in Jamestown on one car and a Cardinal (state bird) on my other car.

While my mother didn't care for this game, my sister, brothers and I played it one summer during a multi-state car trip:

Spot the Road Kill

We thought it was hysterical and it kept us busy for HOURS!

Thanks all for the great responses.

Regretfully, Sargeant Schultz, I think my son would love the road kill game...

We used to play license plate BINGO with my daughter. We would mix up the states and mark them on pieces of paper ahead of time. During the trip we would all be looking for the different states and marking the cards.

We gambled and paid 10 cents a game to the winner (driver excluded from marking). Needless to say on the East Coast, Alaska and Hawaii were hard to find.

Between the lines
Our kids also played states, states and capitols, flowers.
1. States & capitols - one person names a state, the other must name the capitol. Most right answers wins.
2. States - going back and forth, each names a state that has not yet been named. You win when the other person can't name a state.
3. Flowers - same as states.

Another variation of States and Flowers is that the next state or flower called must start with the last letter of the last state or flower. For example, Alabama - next state has to start with an A.

And then there were those repeating lists games. "I went on a trip and in my suitcase I packed a toothbrush." Next person repeats and adds an item; but each person must repeat whole statement and all items in order.

We took A LOT of LONG road trips!!!!!

Oh yea, I also have a CD of TV theme songs for sing alongs.

I also have an eight year old son. I found a card game for in the car at a teacher supply store. Each player is dealt 10 cards and each card has a different thing on it like a stop sign, a motorcycle, a cow, a church steeple, etc. The idea is to find those things while driving and the one who gets rid of their cards first wins. And if you see a police car you can get rid of any of one of your cards. I can't remember the official name of it but it helps time pass. If you're interested I can remember to look in my van when I go home for lunch to get the name of it.

JLJ - I thought my family was the only one that was "touched"! We play the Cow game too. The sadest part of it is typically we have only adults in the car when we play. Sometimes we even play for dinner, since the loser had to bury all those dead cows in the cemetaries we past, they surely have lots of beef (burgers, steak, roast, etc) to dispose of

You start out with, "I'm thinking of something..."

Now ask a yes or no question to try to figure out what the other person is thinking about. Such as, "Is it bigger than a bread box?" or "Is it alive?" etc. with a max of 20 questions. If you guess what it is before then, you win!

Sooo, I'm thinking of something...
