I had a friend tell me that they felt it in Baltimore! Looks like it was centered somewhere around Richmond?

From AP:

http://hosted.ap.org/dynamic/stories/U/U...-08-23-14-11-39

WASHINGTON (AP) -- A 5.9 magnitude earthquake centered northwest of Richmond, Va., shook much of Washington, D.C., and was felt as far north as Rhode Island and New York City.

The quake sent hundreds of people spilling into the street a block from the White House, with other buildings evacuated in North Carolina and tremors felt as far away as New York City.

The U.S. Geological Survey said the earthquake was 3.7 miles deep. Shaking was felt at the White House and all over the East Coast, as far south as Chapel Hill, N.C. Parts of the Pentagon, White House and Capitol were evacuated. The quake was in Mineral, Va., in Louisa County.

NW of Philly - we felt it.

Someone in my son's office near King of Prussia PA was on the phone with a colleague in Virginia. The colleague told him about the quake and 2 minutes later, they felt it in KofP.

I'm surprised it was felt so far away. That's a good size earthquake. (no I didn't feel it smile )

I just read that the Pentagon was evacuated because folks thought it was under attack. That would be scary.

Any reports of damage anywhere?

FINALLY ABOVE the gnat line
Yup - that one had me researching fault lines east of the Mississippi. The articles I read indicated that there are several fault lines that we never think about and there are numerous earthquakes each year but because the faults are so deep, they aren't felt very often. The article also stated that earthquakes on our side of the mississippi would be felt over a greater distance. The New Madrid fault is the biggie - will devastate Memphis if it does what it did in the 1800's. There is also a big one under Beaufort SC and all along the SC coast.
