Pedaling along a scenic highwa...
Since the theme has shifted to appliances and such, I have a question:

How long should a set of double ovens last? We have some that are about 9-10 years old. A few months ago, they went out. With it having been over 100 pretty much since June 12, we were okay with not using ovens. However, we'll be needing them again soon, so my question is:

Should we replace them (about $3,000) or have them fixed? If we fix them, should we expect them to go out again soon?

The refrigerator we just bought is in the "Gallery" lineup (Frigidaire, maybe?) so we'll likely get everything (double ovens, stovetop, dishwasher) to match if we buy new, so the pricetags will be relatively high.

Thoughts?

$3,000 buys a lot of takeout, according to Peepers....

Parts although expensive (little part cost ?) but not nearly expensive if you can fix yourself, as new or calling in a repair person

I don't have a double overn (wish I did) but my single oven will be replaced. After all, it was put in the house when it was built in 1978. Timer doesn't work but it still bakes nicely.

How many parts are there in an oven? You wouldn't think it would cost too much to repair. I guess you need an estimate on the repairs Pup to make a decision. Don't you just love it when the repair place tells you it's $100 to come out, but that charge will apply to the repair or against a new replacement, should you decide to do that? It's not like you are going to get a second opinion on an oven....

Ovens are easy to fix. If they both went at the same time, sounds like a power issue or a simple control issue. Thermostats, elements, and controls are fairly cheap compared to a new oven. Trouble shooting the problem is pretty easy, but if you are not good with or are afraid of electricity, you should hire a repair man. 220 volts does not feel good.

Repair Clinic is a great resource for information on troubleshooting and repair parts. I used them to keep a washer, dryer, water heater, fridge and stove/oven going for many years.

It's either a control chip or the control board, from the error message I got.

As for "doing it myself", I have neither the time, the know-how, nor the will to face 220 volts. LOL.

But, I do have a HELOC. smile

All this talk about countertops and appliances - I want a stainless steel dual fuel stove - gas top with electric oven. Maybe next spring I can get it.

Borrowing money is so cheap these days!

Prime plus less than 1% - how can you pass that up?

220 is usually half the amps of 110 that your are getting hit with at one time (it hurts less). shocked shocked shocked shocked laugh

I know that it makes big sparks and while I have never tested them back to back to compare the level of pain - I don't like getting hit with 110 OR 220 either one! After many years of home repairs I usually can avoid sparks/shocks.... Unless I am working at CheekEE's house smile Stupid faulty switch.... Lol.

I have one! It's really pretty too. Teal accent wall and all the other walls are a sandy color. It's like being at the beach.

Oh, that's what I am thinking of doing in my bedroom. Looking for a comforter now so I can pick colors. I need something soothing and calming after the last couple of years I have had.

Mum - I got mine at Target several years ago. I painted my accent the boldest color in the blanket, my bathroom a shade lighter and my walls and trim were colors in the blanket as well. It turned out very nice ... until i lost the blanket in my divorce. rofl. ... oh well.
