There was a show on Animal Planet that talked about this. Evidently, people tatoo their pets, bedazzle bugs, and have doggie dye competitions too.

I did see a hairless cat with tatoos, it did look better and seem to have more confidence ....

On the Animal Planet show, they said the dye was temporary and made mostly of vegetable based dyes and food coloring. It's supposed to wash out within a week. I think that's ok, but I'm against the whole tatooing animals thing.

Our greyhound has his racing numbers tattooed in his ears. Almost all greyhounds have tattoos that allow identification of bloodline and birthdate of the animal. Handy for proving someone stole your dog!

A lot of ranchers tattoo numbers into the ears of their cattle. This is in addition to their eartag, and in many cases, a freeze brand or hot brand.
Here's an interesting tidbit - after freeze branding a black cow, it's hair will grow back in white!

The tatooing on that show was not for id purposes....it was for "artistic" purposes. One lady had her hairless cat tatooed with King Tut's face on the cat's chest. And a guy in Asia sedates and tatoos pigs, then sells them for upwards of 10 grand (more if the tatoo art is large). He basically uses the pigs as canvases.
BTW, it was one of those "Most Extreme" episodes.

Our greyhound has his racing numbers tattooed in his ears. I forgot about that. Our Airedale had an ID tattoo on her belly from the SPCA. But that was a small tattoo done while she was being fixed, not some piece of art. Even if they sedate them for the process, it still hurts for a little while afterwards.
