A CU, Where Regs Don't Apply
My collections department is questioning the retention period on garnishment paperwork received for persons that do not have an active account at the time we are served. They were previously told to hold them permanently, but I cannot find any proof that this is necessary. Does anyone have any guidance on this?

Matt,
I previously worked at an Iowa bank. I know the Iowa Bankers Association published a Record Retention Guide that included garnishments. If you have access to that, it may help you.
Good Luck!

I have the CU version and it doesn't mention anything on garnishments at all, except in the personnel section, so that's annoying.

I've searched the IBA and of course it's in the log-in portion, but I'm trying to seek assistance from someone local that may get me my answer. Thanks!

I have the records retention manual from the IBA and it says 7 years for garnishment orders.
