<---- Tolkien nerd and proud of it! I loved the entire LOTR trilogy and I can't wait until I can see The Hobbit! I loved the book, I can't wait to see what Peter Jackson does with it.
I've had Middle Earth withdrawals since 2003!

Blaaaa, I am so tired to of these comic book movies. Almost every one of them is terrible and so hard to get into.
Is it me, or is Hollywood out of ideas?
Back to the hobbit though. I followed your link and there were a few other movies after it with Peter Jackson doing some of the work on the movie. The set is really pretty amazing.

I hope Jackson doesn't make Thorin more heroic than he really is. I still think is was a stupid mistake to include the dwarf tossing comment in the Balrog scene in Moria.

I have not read the books but it seems like this adventure will have a lot more important heroes in the story. Is this true?

More important heroes? No, about as many as would be needed for the caliber of the adventure. Some LOTR characters are obviously part of the story like Gandalf, Bilbo and Elrond. Some may be implied, since Legolas was around in Mirkwood even though he is not in the actual book (he is almost 2,000 years old in LOTR) and of course various other characters can be implied to have been around (the various elder Elves from LOTR), and Aragorn and his eventual Elvish wife (since he is 80+ years old in LOTR and would have been in his 20s in The Hobbit which is 60 years prior to LOTR, and she is thousands of years old)
There should be some very interesting new heroes not mentioned in LOTR, but if I point them out, it'll give something away to the non-Geeks.

The Hobbit (the book) is very different than the Lord of the Rings trilogy. It is more light-hearted and has more of a fairy tale feeling. Tolkien throws in more aside type comments. Orcs are referred to as goblins. The dwarves are more bumbling than in LOR. The elves seem more mischeivious than noble.
There isn't a sense of overriding doom that is in LOR, because Sauron (referred to as the "Necromancer") was only just beginning to make his comeback known. (I'm sure this will be a major theme in the film, although it was only hinted at in the book.)
The best part of the book (IMHO) is the dragon (Smaug). He has "stolen" the treasure of the Dwarves and occupied another one of their ancestral homes (after they abanondoned Moria to the balrog).
Gandalf recommends Bilbo to a group of Dwarves who are setting out (also at Galdalf's suggestion) to steal the treasure back from Smaug. Bilbo is hired as their "burgler."
There is much more to it, of course, and many more characters, but I wouldn't say The Hobbit is "more heroic," but it is more fun.

I always thought the same Buggs, that it is more light-hearted. I always thought of it as the type of book to read by your fireplace in the fall. Commentaries by Tolkein himself in his book "Letters" and by various Tolkein Scholars on the website Onering.com also point out that Tolkein originally meant this as a children's tale, although the ideas for LOTR were beginning to take shape in his mind. he had been working on The Silmarillion for decades before The Hobbit, so many of the ideas were already in raw form.

I read that The Hobbit/LOTR came out of a story he made up for his children about Tom Bombadil.
Yes, Aragorn was around and probably already a Ranger at the time. I think it is stated (or alluded to) in the LOTR that he accompanied Gandalf on his trip to southern Mirkwood to drive back the Necromancer. And I think it was Aragorn that eventually captured Gollum/Smeagol after Sauron had questioned and released him. After it was learned that Gollum had spoken the word "Baggins," Aragorn became the unseen and secret protector of The Shire.
There is a lot of ground to cover. I heard that The Hobbit will be a two-part film. Does anyone know if that is true?

I will miss Richard Boone being the voice of Smaug, he did a great job.

Yes, it will be a two part film, the first part coming out in Dec. 2012 and the second in Dec. 2013. I think the title of the second is "There and Back Again". Hey Buggs, regarding your comment above about the dwarf tossing comment in the first film, I think that was in there because in the second film Aragorn had to toss Gimli during the battle of Helm's Deep. Gimli said "Your gonna have to toss me, but don't tell the Elf." I just realized what a geek I must be to know all that.
