Does anyone have any suggestions on what to get my Aunt who is turning 90 this March and having her first surprise birthday party? Thanks for any suggestions!

Does she get her hair done somewhere? Maybe a gift certificate for that?

if you're going to give a 90 year old a surprise party, i would suggest a defibrillator...they aren't up for shock

What about taking all of her recipes and making a nice cookbook? Maybe supplement with photos of the family??

You can pay for a month of meal delivery, if she participates in one via the local hospital or senior citizens center.

If she still lives on her own, there are some very nice meal delivery places (Healthy Gourmet, etc.) but not all cities have them. I really like that idea, Esks.

My grandmother always wanted two things: a nice box of chocolates and cigarettes. I always refused to buy her the cigarettes and told her I wouldn't be guilty of putting her in an early grave. She died of lung cancer at 86. Irony...I lit the last cigarette she ever had. Guess God thought it was a good chance to humble me. It worked.

Write to every politician. They will flood her with birthday greetings.

For my mom's 80th, we got her Christmas card list and sent a letter to everyone on the list. It basically said it was her birthday and a special occasion and since mom's greatest love was her friends, we would appreciate if they could send a letter with a special story and a greeting. We had those go to a sibling (out of the area) who mounted them in an album.

We delivered the album to mom on her birthday. She went through 2 boxes of kleenex that night, and we never touched the cake. Letters from dad and the 3 kids started it off. We mailed out 99 letters, got 101 back along with great memories. The book was with her always, and in her hands when she passed away.

For my Mom's last birthday we did a memory box as she had dementia. Everyone in the family wrote down some of their fondest memories. My sister printed them all off on cards and we put them in a box so she could read them whenever she wanted and hopefully would be things she could recall. Unfortunately it was the last birthday we got to celebrate with her, but it was fun to see her giggle as she went through the cards reading them.

Thank you all so much for the suggestions. My aunt has lived a very blessed life and gratefuly still has her health and her mind, a rarity at her age.

Wow! The changes that she has witnessed.....It would make an interesting scrap book! The big historical things, communications, transportation, toys, entertainment, political changes....
Must be an amazing woman. I'll bet she would love your time.
