Nooo! I had the biggest crush on him - and he was the Grand Marshall for the parade for our annual festival back when I was about 12. What happened to him (although I'll probably google here in a minute)?

I think every girl I knew back then under the age of 15 had a crush on the little guy. And as much as people like to make fun of their music, people are still listening to it 40 years later!

I am proud to admit that I was a Monkees fan, and my first crush was Davy Jones. Mike Nesmith has voiced the best tribute I've read:

"David's death is merely a “transition.” That David has stepped beyond my view causes me the sadness that it does many of you. I will miss him, but I won’t abandon him to mortality,”

RIP Davy

My wife (at the time)and I had the extreme pleasure of meeting Mr. Jones at the Front Street Station in Northumberland PA. It is a restaurant along the Susquehanna river. He owned a horse farm outside a small hamlet called Beaver Springs in Snyder county and used to spend his summers there. He got a great kick out of me telling him I had a Monkees drum set when I was a kid, got stupid and destroyed it one day, got beat for it, and have regretted I don't have it to this day. I was very saddened to see his passing.

I guess he took the last train to.....

RIP Davy

Actually, their version of Pleasant Valley Sunday was pretty good. Of course, it was written by Carole King and Gerry Goffin (when they lived on Pleasant Valley Way, West Orange, NJ), so how could it not be?

His last concert was in Oklahoma. All the local media people, couldn't say enough about how polite and funny he was.

He was still performing fairly often. He was scheduled to play at a local theatre this month.

Also, he was a vegetarian.

Where the heart is
So sad to hear about this. He seemed so vibrant and so active.

My husband and I got to see the Monkeys a few years ago when they had their reunion tour. We happened to go the one night that David Nesmith joined the band onstage. Talk about reliving your childhood memories!

For any Trekkies/Trekkers out there, the character of Chekov was modeled after Davey Jones somewhat in terms of the look of the character. Rodenberry wanted a "younger" crew member to appeal to teenage audiences and specifically mentioned the The Monkeys.

And I think both of them influenced the hairstyle of the character Howard Wolowitz on Big Bang Theory.
