Where the heart is
So what does this say when my husband and I had different reactions to last night's Big Bang Theory episode.

I thought it was hilarious when Sheldon took Amy up on her sarcastic offer to let him play video games instead of going with her to the birthday party as he had promised. After all, cardinal rule in dealing with men is you NEVER tell them something if you don't want them to take it literally.

My husband, on the other hand, was upset that Sheldon bailed on Amy and was hoping Sheldon would show up, last minute, to the birthday party.

I looked at him and said "But that's SHELDON, you're talking about. Of course he sees nothing wrong in leaving since that is what he wanted to do anyways."

I find a guy acting like a j-erk to be funny 'cause you know he'll pay for it later. My husband was sad for Amy.

Show of hands - how many have downloaded the Whip Cracking App for their phone?

I liked it when Amy said her grandmother would be disappointed and Sheldon commented that she's 93 and wouldn't be disappointed for long.

Best comedy on TV!

I liked when Amy was trying to learn how to throw a tantrum "like a girl", and Raj went off about how it was supposed to be a day with the guys, and Penny pointed out "that's how you throw a tantrum like a girl!"

Agreed - last new episode I thought Howard had the funniest line, and this week it was Raj. I mean, his righteous indignation at not getting a girlfriend until AFTER Sheldon Cooper..... too funny!

Mostly I enjoy this show which has become my husband's new favorite. But last night was hard to watch. Somehow, Sheldon getting away with bad behavior because he's so smart just didn't strike me as funny. Goodness, they even have charm classes at MIT that teach all kinds of social behaviours. Sheldon is their poster boy!

But then if he'd attended, the show would lose it's main pretense so I guess I'll just sit over there and commisserate with your husband, PR, while you watch with mine.

But Sheldon has ALWAYS gotten away with bad behavior. The show's entire history is rife with it:

Second episode of the show, Sheldon breaks into Penny's apartment to clean it while she's sleeping.

The fourth episode - he mouths off to his new boss and gets fired and then starts driving everyone crazy until his mom comes out.

The episode where he pitches a fit in a Chinese restaurant because they can't split their usual order since Howard isn't there with them. (Love the waiter - he was also a Chinese restaurant maƮtre d' for Seinfeld).

The episode where he walks off with Raj's date because she looks like Princess Panchali

The episode where he gets into fisticuffs with Leonard over the paper that Leonard presented at the conference.

The episode where he got sick and everyone tried to avoid him because of his demands. (First appearance of Soft Kitty)

When the guys kicked him off the Physics Bowl Team because of his behavior.

When he spoils Leonard's Surprise Party because Penny can't get him out of the Electronics Store.

When he almost derails Leonard's relationship with Dr. Stephanie.

When he tries to make Barry Kripke his new friend and kicks Raj out of their circle.

When he behaves like a giant Dictator (or Dickension) at the North Pole.

When he throws a tantrum for not being Leonard's guest to the Large Hadron Collider.

When he gets booted off the development team for the new phone app for formulas.

A few episodes back, Leonard voided the Roommate Agreement due to Sheldon's demands, and in the end knuckled under to him.

I could go, but I think I've made my point.... (last line of his "my spot" lecture!)

Oh, I know, PR. That's why I said if he'd behaved any differently, that would ruin the pretence of this show!

I should have been more specific that it's just this particular episode's behaviour that grated on me (and your husband) more than Sheldon's other 'quirks'. I've got my own personal theory as to why, as I'm sure Mr. Princess Romeo does too. So, we'll go sit in the corner and discuss it when this show comes on the rerun circuit, ok? wink

Fair enough. I suspect it was because Sheldon had no right to ditch Amy after promising to her that he would go, and it was so important for her to show off an actual boyfriend to her family and she was let down once again.

I will say tonight's episode probably put Amy in the most sympathetic light than she has been in so far. It was more than her just talking about all of the slights she experienced growing up.

And maybe because Sheldon reminds me so much of my brother that I did not expect to see any better behavior from him.

Sheldon has to act like that. He is so intelligent, but has no social skills. It's a real thing. If he acted any differently, it wouldn't be accurate.

Try the "IgunPro" app. It will get you pretty close. Also handy for road rage with out actually having to go to jail.....or so I hear. smile

The thing about Sheldon is that he represents a part of humanity that we all have, but most of us have an internal censor that stops those comments due to social convention. Sheldon is blissfully unaware of social convention! smile

And yet, if you tell him something is a non-optional social convention, then he agrees to do it.

I loved it last week when Sheldon's mother said "Cream of mushroom soup and cheese, the way to a man's heart. He'll die at 50, but his love will be true."

No - just working late on an out of town assignment. It gets pretty boring in the hotel room, but I'm not up for a night of drinking on the town.
