I need some feedback and discussion because evidently I'm missing something.

Obama blocks Texas law that would require driver's license or ID Card in order to vote....to protect against voting fraud and such. He did this because such a requirement would make it hard for Hispanics to vote as many don't have DLs or ID cards.

Question is....why can't they just go get an ID card or driver's license like everyone else? I'm confused.

Minorities (if you believe some people) are not as intrinsically capable of obtaining ID.

I took my mother to renew her driver's license, which expired two days ago on her birthday. My county is now hooked up directly with social security admn. The DOB on her existing DL doesn't match with what SS records show. They said she would have to come back with her birth certificate and stand in line again. She's 86 and we can't find her birth certificate. To order a birth certificate on line, one must have a valid driver's license....which she does not because it expired two days ago.

Go figure.

Oh....I wondered why the controversial cooler was missing. I never post there or go there. But I was interested in an answer to this because I don't understand it.

I suppose this thread will be nixed?....dissapear? Oh well...........and shoot...I finally had a topic I was interested in discussing.

Wisconsin's was just blocked yesterday as well.

While I personally do not believe voter fraud is as big of an issue that the conservatives make it out to be (seriously, most fraud will generally happen in heavily democratic areas that will go democratic anyways, and while it may have some minimal impact on local elections, the electoral college is your control on a national level), who doesn't have a photo ID these days?

I personally do not have an issue with voter ID laws... just shut-up and get it. Chances are you need it for so many other handouts your getting from me already anyways.

Somewhere in the middle
Swiggles, a few years back we ran into a similar issue with SS and DOB for my Grandma. She had no birth certificate, so we took in her grandma's family bible which had it recorded when she was born.

We recently were able to obtain an id for an 8 year old without any difficulty. Why is it so hard for everyone to get one?

My three year old has a passport and a NYS ID for 2 1/2 years.
We applied for both thinking that we would have an issue with at least 1. No issues

FINALLY ABOVE the gnat line
Weren't the qualifications for ID to obtain a DL or state ID card strengthened in the last couple of years? Everyone relies on these for positive ID.

I suppose it would be difficult for folks with an undocumented birth, but how often does that really happen in our society these days? Do those folks who advocate against these new rules think that minorities don't have their babies in the hospital and don't have birth certificates? In my parent's day or grandparent's day that would have been true. I don't think its been true in decades.

There is actually a law in (I think) every state that requires all adults to have proper idetification on their person at all times.

I don't understand the entire voter fraud issue - in Louisiana, it is only fraudulent if someone "doesn't" pay for your vote...

Yes, but their mothers (as their fathers were out of the picture) didn't know better to keep the birth certificate in a safe place and now it is lost, so they have to pay to get a copy, pay to take an hour long bus ride with three transfers downtown, then get to the DMV, more bus fare and more transfers, once there, long waits, confusion, possible charges for the ID, yada, yada, yada... bleh.

Ummmm, I wrote to the FL department of records, included a check for the appropriate amount and received mine in the mail in a couple of weeks. Needed it to get my passport.....

Werd... just throwing out the standard reasoning thrown around here by the 'advocate' groups why it is such a hardship for the innercity folk to obtain an ID.

This administration seems to be selectively taking steps to block voter ID laws in certain states, like maybe Red states.
Connecticut, a very blue state, has a voter ID law and you muct show a government issued ID before you can vote. ID stops deceased people from voting. I guess Obama feels he needs all the help he can get!

Just had this discussion with a bunch of people and they kept bringing up the hard-ship it would cause poor people. Told them to go back to the old days..if they are actually hearing this from people verses just repeating what they have heard, then be a good neighbor, friend, whatever and give them a ride to the DMV or babysit the 3 kids someone kept insisting would be to hard to take on the bus...whatever, just lend a helping hand. They didn't have a comeback for that one.

Here in the OC, you can fill out a form online, but you must print it and return it to the registrar of voters by mail or in person. I just looked it up - the form says:
CA driver's license or CA ID card #:
If you do not have a CA driver's license or ID card, list the last 4 numbers of your Social Security Number, if you have one.

That's all that's required. eek
