Is a "rep payee" only a term used for SSI and other Treasury checks? We received a check: John Doe of Jimmy Doe. My understanding is that this could not be put in a rep payee account, but instead in an account titled the same way as the check.

Also, we use the SSI checks as our documentation for opening a rep payee account. I don't see why we couldn't do the same with a "for" check from the state, but I am not sure. Do we need specific documentation?

"Rep. Payee" is a type of fiduciary that SSA requires for handling SSI benefits and not money from other sources.

If it is a state check that you are looking at, you might want to consult your state laws for the correct fiduciary account to be set up and any other requirements that come with it.

If it is an actual "rep payee" check, the individual that was appointed as "rep payee" will likely have some kind of acknowledgement letter by the SSA that they can product as evidence of that fact.
