Way, way south.
From yahoo.com:

The social news-sharing site Reddit has a knack for exposing people and situations. The latest topic of discussion to generate controversy is a series of tweets from people who did not know that the sinking of the Titanic was a real historical event.
Apparently, an entire generation of people associate "Titanic" with the Hollywood blockbuster starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet. Here is the disambiguation for you. The RMS Titanic sank April 15, 1912, after hitting an iceberg. The tragedy is considered one of the deadliest of peacetime maritime disasters. More than 1,500 people died.
"Titanic" the film was released December 19, 1997, and was an instant success. It became the highest-grossing film of all time for 12 years, until "Avatar" debuted in 2009.
For all the history buffs reading this, the next couple of sentences may be too painful to contemplate. A couple of the tweets from the uninformed read, "Nobody told me titanic was real? How am I just finding this out?" Another tweet read, "Guys, the Titanic was real! #mindblown."
Most people ware of the existence of the RMS Titanic are in disbelief. One such person tweeted, "The ignorance is astounding." Another person said he was "weeping for the future" at finding out that so many young people are unfamiliar with such a well-known fact.

I always laugh when the American Idol kids are going to sing a Mariah Carey song and it's "Without You." But then I get itritated with Randy Jackson for acting like it one of her songs when all she did was copy the great Harry Nillson, who covered it from Badfinger. smile

hmmm...it's been 100 years.

I wonder what events from the 20th century will be well-known 500 or 1,000 years from now? The Moon Landing and WWII. I would imagine all the huge technological advances (cars, planes, electricity, computers, internet, tv) will be grouped together.

As it remains one of the largest peacetime maritime disasters, and embodies our species desire towards opulance (not to mention the wealth of people and luxuries aboard), I don't see Titanic ever being forgotten. Or at least I'd hoped so. I guess the furture is doomed to repeat the past.

Good point, BaBo! I guess this is just one of those things you kind of take for granite that everyone would know - near, far, wherever they are...

I believe that the heart does go on, BoBo.

((and I'll be cursing you the rest of this weekend for getting that dangnabbit song stuck in my head. If I have to go see the movie in 3D, it'll all be your fault! mad ))

Tiger's Den!
My granddaughter is in 7th grade, and until I talked to her about it recently, was unaware of the Nazi concentration camps or the tragedy on 9/11. it has not been part of her history curriculum in school. If we, the parents and grandparents do not enlighten the children, who will? Certainly not the schools!!!

My 8 year old knows all about 9/11 and the Nazi concentration camps, but I would doubt he knows anything about the Titanic. My 5 year old on the other hand, when asked what the Titanic was about, told her daddy it was about two people in love and a boat that sinks.

I wonder if this is a subset of people who don't believe the Holocaust was real, Jesus was just a man, King Arthur did rule, etc etc etc

because I'm a banking goober, when I'm told what my price is at a store, if paying cash when I give it to them I usually calculate my change before they have it done on the register. I said it out loud once, the girl said "how'd you do that?"

I rarely pay cash, but on the chance that I am and I have change, I always love when I have this situation:

Bill: $4.07
Cash handed to person: $5 bill and two pennies

Watch their mind explode as they attempt to figure out why you would do such a weird thing. I actually had a person in a drive-thru tell me they didn't think I could do that and needed to check with a manager.

Wait until the manager actually asks you "Why did you do that?"
