Hated the suicide runs, and the food wasn't particularly good.

Once at scout camp one of our leaders who was blind as a bat without his glasses wandered into the ladies shower room. I can still hear the screams. Good times.

I just knew something was up that summer at church camp. You see, I grew up in a family of hunters and knew for a fact that there wasn't anything you could hunt, at night, in the woods, with a plastic garbage bag and a stick. Didn't matter that I had never heard of a snipe, I didn't trust those wily camp counselors. So after dragging us into the thickest part of the woods they turned and ran. I ran with them.

Uggghhh, the words send shivers down my spine and cause flashbacks of camping with my son's large pack of Cub Scouts . There was one fun moment though. We were on a hike and our den leader suggested looking for any signs of animal life. I brought everyone's attention to a little hole in the ground I had found and told them it was a mole hole. Some of the kids asked how I knew what kind of hole it was. I told them if they got down there and looked really, really hard, they should be able to see Mole-asses!! On the bright side, it was suggested that our attendance at future camping trips would not be necessary.

Hated the suicide runs, and the food wasn't particularly good. At one of the camps i went to, there were 2 gyms: the large, modern air-conditioned one, and the 1920s built, non-air conditioned sauna one. There were accusations that one kid (out of about 180) stole some money, so all of the older campers (my group) spent an entire day in the old gym running wind sprints all day (this was 1980, the hottest summer on record in Oklahoma, maybe to this day). Good times.

Worse than "suicide runs" were running "bleachers". Basically, in our old gym, it was running laps whilst running from the bottom bleacher to the top one, then back down and following the same thing on the other side of the gym.

Basically, in our old gym, it was running laps whilst running from the bottom bleacher to the top one, then back down and following the same thing on the other side of the gym. Our track coach's favorite punnishment was to take us to the football stadium where most of the track meets were held, and have us run stairs until we either fell over, it was too dark to see or he got bored. Generally it was darkness that saved us. Those were killer!

Lots of sleepless knights? Probably because he was the new guy - I know we always saved the worst of the hazing for the Rook-ies... Upawn reflection, maybe that wasn't a very nice thing to do...

Is the term "suicide runs" still used? I would think some overly excessive politically correct politician or activist would have squashed it by now. I hope it's still used because the name is dead-on. As a coach I can tell you yes you are correct. We cannot call them that, they are now "Line Drills." They frowned on my use of Separators cause they separate the men from the boys. And that can be demoralizing to the "boys".

Suicides were bad...we did "ladder runs" as well. Timed sprints in 1-3-5-7-5-3-1 intervals. One in 5 sec, 3 in 15, 5 in 20, etc. The times were the same going back down and everyone had to hit it. Brutal!

Running the "lines" in the gym was no fun either....especially if the gym was set up for volleyball, since that added about 20 extra lines it seemed.
