Sounds like it was named by someone in the process of drowning in it shocked

My mom remembers her high school band (from a couple hundred miles away) marching in the big parade they had to celebrate the occassion.

And I know lots of people from Muleshoe. It's just about 50 miles from here. You'd be shocked at how many people who 'ain't from around here' pronounce it mull-ess-hoe. That always cracks me up.

North East, PA - which is funny only because it is located in the North WEST corner of the state.

How about the funny way people (legitimately) pronounce their town?

Pierre (PEER) SD
Beatrice (bee-AT-ris) NE
Norfolk (NOR-fork) NE
Madrid (MAD-rid) IA
Nevada (nuh-VAY-duh) IA

Just what I could come up with off the top of my head. I am sure there are places like this all around the country.

The one that bugs me the most: Humble (umble), Texas

To me, it's one thing when a non-word that becomes a word for a placename has a non-sensical pronunciation (if people who live there say its pronounced that way, that' fine). But "humble" is a word in the English language and i don't say it "umble". :climbing off soapbox"

it's pronounce Umble because no one from Texas would ever admit to being "Humble"...don't believe me, just ask them (Texas native, BTW)

Ha....you're right. To me, it would be the equivalent of someone in "Frogville, Oklahoma" telling you "no, it's not 'frogville'...it's 'frooogville'."

I grew up in Barkeyville, PA. Named after a man named Barkey, not because we had a lot of dogs.

Just west of me on the interstate. I have been there and never actually heard any dogs, now I know why.
