On a sled
When I was out at lunch I saw at least two stations with $2.99 cash price. Just in time for the weekend.

I've not seen a difference for cash vs. plastic anywhere in the state, I'd happily pay cash for a discount though!

$3.28 I believe I saw last night.

Way, way south.
A lot of the stations down this way offer a discount of about 10 cents per gallon with a car wash.

We have that too, I think almost every one in town that has its own car wash does a $.10 discount. Of course their car washes are still generally more costly than the stand alone places...so it pretty much balances out.

So Cal
I have found that when gas prices are high, it saves money in the long run to buy premium unleaded because I get about 2 mpg more than with regular. Plus I get better performance.

For example, Most of my driving is city and I get 20mpg with regular and 22mpg with premium.

Since premium is always $0.20 more per gallon than regular, regardless of price, I come out ahead with premium whenever regular is over $2.00/gallon. At $2.00/gallon and 20mpg, that's $.10/mile. At $2.20/gal and 22mpg with premium, that's also $.10/mile.

With today's prices:

Premium: $4.29/gallon @ 22mpg = $.195/mile
Regular: $4.09/gallon @ 20mpg = $.205/mile

Saving a penny a mile doesn't sound like a lot, but driving the average 12,000 miles per year adds up to $120!

And $120 will almost buy you a tank of gas! j/k

Actually, GD, that was cool analysis....very informative.

I've been wanting to do that analysis on my own car GD. I always pump premium when I'm going anywhere out of town, but I wasn't sure what the breakdown would look like in-town. Most of my driving is 5-6 miles or less per trip, but I still average 21-23 most of the time. Sounds like I could estimate that it'd be a savings for me.

Exactly! It won't matter because that means it's the end of the world.

Good luck Matt. I found that premium gives me better mileage both in city and highway driving. Of course, rapid acceleration is bad for mileage and is one of my joys. whistle

Tire pressure, clean air filter, cleaning out junk and reducing weight in the car all help improve gas mileage. By themselves they don't make a huge difference but together they can add up.

And no Ed, I am not becoming a hippie just because I live in CA. wink

Well, I need to fill up today and I saw $3.20 at one particular place that's apparently cheaper than everyone else. I'll splurge on the $3.40, and make sure I wash my window to get all the dust off that's currently weighing me down and increasing my wind resistance.

With the big honeymoon road trip next month that will put us in the car for 10 days and a few thousand miles, those few cents per gallon will add up.

Somewhere in the middle
I used to run middle or premium in my vehicles until I had excess carbon build up on my throttle plate and plugs.

I asked the mechanic how did this happen as I run premium gas grades, and he said that was my problem, if you car calls for 87 octane in the manual, that is what you need to run, your car can't use the extra octane so it burns it. thus the carbon build up.

Don't know if it is true, it made since to me and I havent had any problems since only running 87 now.

Gas prices fell through the floor here! $3.49! LOL

I find it funny how the prices are actually always 9/10 of a cent, where else do you ever get charged a fraction of a cent in a retail purchase. $3.499... its really $3.50.
