I see more and more employees with these books in the breakroom,on their desks and hear them talking about parts in the book in the breakrooms. I am wondering if we should allow books like these to be brought in to work?

WHile this is certainly not my area of expertise... I cant imagine you would have a "Banned Books" list. Probably similar rules governing images and speech would cover books with promiscuous covers. From what I understand the cover of the book is a tie?

I dont know why you would want to prevent anyone from bringing a book to work?

Whats your concern?

And you certainly aren't going to stop them from talking about it either in the breakroom, the teller line or on the phone so I wouldn't get too wound up. You have to trust that they will maintain appropriate conversation bounderies when customers are present and move on.

I agree with the other posters, I don't think there is much you can do. However, if people need to be reminded to stay on task and on work topics during non-break hours, that is something different. In addition, I don't think it would be out of line to ask employees to keep their personal items like books put away during non-break times.

I was asked to find if other banks had concerns with the books since there is such a big uproar about them. I feel the same way as manimal and zoo mama. As long as the books are not left out on desks, etc. and discussion is kept to the breakrooms or before and after work. Thanks for your replies.

And also when other employees are around that may not be comfortable with the subject matter. I would imaging though, as with many pop-culture phenoms, that this too shall pass. smile

Just be aware of sexual harrassment claims from employees who are in the presence of riske conversations. Conversations should remain appropriate for work, regardless if it is a discussion of a book, movie, or what someone did the night before.

Yes, other employees are what crossed my mind. We have had previous incidents with inappropriate conversations and we don't want that to happen again.

I would think there is less of a problem with this book series than traditional romance novels. Look at the difference in cover art...

Romance novels are a lot more explicit reading, as well as the covers. I would be very upset if my boss told me I wasn't allowed to read a certain book during my lunch break. I completely understand how discussing it may be an issue if the ladies are putting their imagination to words.

Out there
Anyone watch a Soap Opera on TV lately! How comfortable are those to sit through with your subordinate sitting in the same room? Seems like there is a time and a place for these activities, which is not in the workplace.

I worked at a bank where the employees would watch Jerry Springer and Maury Povich over lunch. You could here the cheers and jeers all the way over by my desk when the paternity test results were announced. crazy

That wasn't cheers that you heard Mani, it was the viewers' brain cells dying.
