CBS was talking about it this morning and saying it was attributed to a number of factors all happening at the same time:
1. Oil prices have gone up. True2. China's increasing demand for oil. false3. OPEC decreased production false4. USA refineries shut down to convert to spring/summer blend. planned; gas supply are still in the pipeline should not be an issue5. Inability to purchase oil from Iran due to sanctions. falseI think that was everything. Walden, I am not disagreeing with you just the media reporting

Time magazine of 2/4/2013: Oil Price Information Services’ Robert Gough told the Des Moine Register, “Gasoline prices averaged $3.60 per gallon last year, and we think they’ll average between $3.25 and $3.50 per gallon this year.” The U.S. Department of Energy, meanwhile, has predicted an average of $3.44 per gallon this year, and $3.34 for 2014. Paid $3.85 for diesel in OKC yesterday. I was excited since it was $3.99 closer to home.

4. USA refineries shut down to convert to spring/summer blend.
not buying this excuse...since this doesn't take place for another month according to a relative who works for Shell...all of the refineries in my neck of the woods are pretty much at capacity...

Plus 1. this is a planned outage they can produce more prior to the outage as they ar rarely at capacity. 2. The gas that is being refined today will not be at the pumps until next month. So the planned outage in March should not be seen in prices until April or May

Locally, we have the world's largest ethanol plant (open and operating plant, there are a couple of larger ones in production currently I guess) that I know a few people at. The last two weeks many of their staff have experienced reduced hours and sitting around doing nothing when then are at work.
Odd to see demand so low for it when gas prices are sky rocketing. I know it's not directly tied to crude oil, but in blends it would seem there would be at least stable demand for ethanol. But hey, I don't claim to know a lot about it, or what other factors might be at play. I do assume that the high costs associated with corn play a significant part in it.

If the price of oil drops, maybe in 3 weeks, the price will go down.

I think short version (mentioned before) is that they charge more because they can. Its the same reason that diesel costs more than gasoline. The free market system at work. There is always bad with the good.
I like CNG more and more everyday.....

supposedly the higher cost for diesel was required to preapre to convert all the diesel manufacturing to the new "clean diesel"...although they are all on clean diesel now and so the cost should have dropped back to about 1/2 that of gasoline, since it has fewer processes in the refinement

The price of diesel escelated long before they began developing "clean diesel" and the, ever popular, Diesel Exhaust Fluid. I really would just prefer that they say that this is the amount of profit that we believe the market will bear.

exactly this will go on until someone calls them on it. This is the job of the politicians and the media who are, let me be kind are slacking off. They do not want to "bite"(read:Oil companies) the hand that feeds them.(read:campaign contributions). Not getting re-elected is, and has been, more important than the hosing of the American people.

There is some speculation going on. Part of the increase in prices is refineries taken offline, part is the summer blend switch, and part is the market adjusting for the possibility that BHO will not approve the keystone pipeline. If he does not, expect gas prices to rise sharply.
