I made him quit dipping in high school simply by refusing to kiss him until he stopped that nasty mess. smile

Unfortunately, it didn't bother my ex-wife nor any of my girlfriends since that i dipped, so i've never had any pressure to quit in that way.

My husband is a dipper too. He quits every January 1st and sometimes he tries during the year too. Last year he made it about 4 months. It is hard to quit.

If you made it a day and a half and couldn't do any more, that was probably the nicotine withdrawal kicking in. Try cutting back gradually, cutting out one dip at a time, for instance the mid-morning dip. When you get used to that, cut out another one, then another and another. Keep doing that until you are down to 1 dip per day. Another way is to take smaller pinches. Both of those will help the body get used to less and less nicotine.

When you're down to 1 dip per day, and you're ready to cut it out completely, try sunflower seeds or mints or something along those lines that will give you the same sensation as dipping. Couple that with a step-down nicotine patch system, and I bet you have a decent chance of beating the habit!

If you fall off the horse and dip again, make a note what the trigger was, and avoid that in the future...especially if its RESPA!! grin grin grin

FINALLY ABOVE the gnat line
There was a gentleman in the church I attended when I lived elsewhere. He was a dipper - wife, 2 kids. Wasn't that old - in his 30's. Throat and Mouth cancer -not pretty. Half his face was removed by surgery trying to save his life and he got to eat with a straw for the remainder of his time on earth - which wasn't that long. If that doesn't convince you, I'm not sure what will.

Quatro, thanks for the sentiment. That plan sounds like the plan for me (and kinda what i've envisioned). I am at the point in my life now that i really only truly enjoy 1 or 2 dips a day, but of course, i don't stop at 1 or 2 dips a day. I've actually been dieting some lately and i've noticed my "consumption" has gone down slightly, so i guess that's a good thing.

Walden, i guess it's like a lot of things....i think we think "that won't be me"....otherwise, i don't guess anybody would ever start smoking, dipping, eating too much, etc. But i do appreciate the attempt and hopefully i can do it.

The hubby says his motivation to quit smoking this time was that he suddenly looked down at his half-smoked cig and thought, "Wow, this really is gross. I don't want to do this anymore." He threw out the rest of that pack and went to the store to buy patches.

Good luck raitchjay!!! I quit smoking this year and it's hard. I've fallen off the wagon a couple times when I'm drinking and have had one or two but luckily it hasn't made me start back up all of the time. I think now it is all mental for me because I'm past the cravings like when I first quit. Now it's if I'm around other people that are smoking it makes me want one. I'm pretty good about just walking away or going somewhere else until they are finished. It's not easy but it can be done!!! I have faith in you! smile

laugh

I can't wait to hear back from married dudes that go home today, screech the car into the driveway, slam open the door and exclaim "Great news! I finally figured out how to quit smoking/dipping!". Then when she inevitably asks "are you going with Chantix or the patch?", they say "doesn't matter, just get the heck out!" laugh laugh

But seriously, good luck to you guys and gals that are quitting. As a wise man once told me, "You can dooo it!" wink

Excellent one CountryGal!

I got in the car, recently, with someone that asked "Do you mind if I roll down the window and smoke?" and I responded "I just as soon you not roll down the window!" grin Didn't bother me in any way. It was interesting. I can sit here and have a craving for no reason but sitting around someone smoking didn't "set me off".

I'm cruisin' for a major meltdown. I can feel it. The C.D. player in my vehicle broke Friday. My commute is 43 miles and I listen to books on C.D. 100% of my drive.

Chew some gum, brush your teeth, distract yourself. Don't light up! Get the CD player fixed ASAP or get yourself a cheap portable CD player with speakers so you can continue listening en route.

I'm hanging. To quote Tom Petty - I won't back down.

I know I can do this. Yessiree, I can do this. Wanna know how many sugar free popsicles I eat? Let's just say if they had a popsicle-eating contest like that Hot Dog eating contest I would be a shoo-in. crazy I found the bestest sugar free Italian Ices too. They are pretty tasty.

Off to get some gum. Thanks all.

I've made it one month. Still waiting for the "it gets easier" part but hanging in there just fine, thankyouverymuch.
