As many of you know, I work with organizations to find new homes for Thoroughbreds that are done racing and would otherwise face the dismal fate of slaughter. Here is one of my favorite stories. Three different organizations coordinated to make this a success: Glo Most Hot - her new career

I didn't know that. I recently met two ladies that adopted two Thoroughbreds from Oklahoma's racing world. I've been around them and the horses and they love and spoil them.

We can postpone, but we and the animal kingdom all face the dismal fate eventually.... Really? We're all going to slaughter?

We can postpone, but we and the animal kingdom all face the dismal fate eventually.... Pale...really? This horse is in excellent condition...s/he was only unhappy because s/he didn't like racing...lots of horses do not like the career we choose for them...but are perfectly happy with other sports. Polo is NOT an easy sport for human or animal...s/he likes it...go her (I think it was a mare!) The huge added bonus is her kindness towards kids...it would have been a travesty for this horse to end up on the long road to slaughter. What a waste that would have been!

Thank you RR Joker. The mare would have been sold to a kill buyer at a track dispersal sale. I was able to direct a few hundred dollars to be sent to a volunteer with another organization local to the area to use at the sale to save at least one horse. The kill buyer was the only other bidder and we got the mare for about $200. Horses like her can be found at tracks all over the country. If you know anyone who is looking for a prospect in any number of disciplines, have them check out www.canterusa.org CANTER provides listings on behalf of trainers who know they need to move horses off the track. If you have a good eye for horses, you can get some amazing bargains. Thoroughbreds have an unfortunate reputation of being high-strung and crazy, but once you get them away from the track and bring them "down", many of them turn out to be very well behaved. Thoroughbreds are handled daily by people from almost the day they are born and they have an innate need to perform and please and will give you 100% of themselves. One of my favorite sayings about them is "There is no quit in a Thoroughbred."

I haven't noticed Thoroughbreds being any "crazier" on the average than any of the other breeds I've handled over the years. In fact, if you want to see mean, mess with a Shetland pony.

In fact, if you want to see mean, mess with a Shetland pony. Bwahahahaha! So very true. Little demons...you cant catch them, they run away from you, take your knee off on fence posts, and will head under any low hanging tree branch they can find.

Shetland ponies are mean!? who knew! There's a reason most horsepeople call them Sh*tlands.

My grandad bought me a shetland when I was a kid. Took it away when he caught me going after it with a 2x4. Darn thing bit!
