FINALLY ABOVE the gnat line

Goodness! It's always nice to know these little tips.... We have 2 new kittens. Covered in fleas and not old enough to use flea treatment. Lady at the pet store said that the orignal Dawn detergent was the best at killing fleas and was kitten and puppy safe. I was looking on the internet to see how to do this exactly and found that something called diatomaceous earth - food quality - is a good flea treatment for the house. Actually it seems to be a miracle item - kills roaches, ants, etc and is good for keeping insects off of your organic garden. Anyone have any experience with that?

Oh didn't you know? The Bloody Mary is for you. The bath is for the cat. Do not go the route of knocking back the Bloody Mary and using that as a means of ignoring the smelly cat, or letting it give you the idea that you must shave the cat to eliminate the smell. Either way, you would end up a very sad person the next day!

I have about 4 bags of food grade earth. I always forget to put it out. The only caveat is that our equine vet is not a fan...even though it's been used as a feed additive for YEARS she says there is no science behind it and isn't in favor of 'dusting' around the animals and them breathing it. It doesn't scare me...but I don't feed it..and I'd think it would be alot safer on small animals than Hartz powder, for instance, would EVER be. Joy works as well if not better than Dawn, too, btw!

I dust my feed room floor with the diatomaceous earth about once a week to help keep roaches out. I also use it on fire ant beds in areas that I'm not confortable putting down poison - like around the barn or in the dogs' yard.

There is a pre-mixed product called "Nature's Miracle" that works really well against skunk odor (or the odor of whatever deceased "treasure" one of the dogs happens to find). Apply it to the pet to saturate the coat, let it dry (about 15 minutes), then rinse off.
This process on a cat isn't too awful. I pour the product onto a washcloth and "pet" the cat with the cloth until the cat's coat is soaked to the skin, and put the cat in a carrier for 15 minutes. Take a fresh washcloth, dunk it in water, use it to pet the cat as before. The cat won't be *quite* as mad as it likely would be for enduring a bath.

Some have heard this, but I have had no small amount of experience with Le fragrance de la skunque! My father is a veterinarian. And once upon a time, it was legal to keep shunks as a pet and they became somewhat popular around the OKC metro for one simple reason, my dad figured out how to anethstetize them with out killing them (skunks and anethetic do not get on well) and snd descent them. The problem in removing the scent gland (other than catching and handling the baby skunk in the first place) is that the glands are delicate and like to explode. And since I was my fathers favorite assistant from the time I was 10 on, I was usually the recipient of the explosion! The poplarity of skunks hit a high about the time I was 16 and smelling like skunk did nothing to aid my attempts to woo the fairer zex! So i had to find something that would do the trick. As it turns out, Massingill douche works wonders! How I discovered this is an enitrly different story, but the downside is being a 16 year old male that has to go into the local grocery store in a town where everyone knows everyone and having to ask for a case of douche! The therapy is still ongoing......
